Singular and Plural Nouns

A singular noun names one person, place, thing, or idea. A plural noun names more than one person, place, thing, or idea.

To form the plural of most nouns, just add -s. cups desks hands fossils toys cats plates hands jaws bears papers pencils drums eyes legs shoes

When the singular ends in s, sh, ch, x, or z, add -es. address - addresses dish - dishes church - churches fox - foxes buzz - buzzes match - matches class - classes

When the singular ends in o, add, -s. stereo - stereos radio - radios solo - solos piano - pianos EXCEPTIONS echoes, heroes, potatoes, tomatoes

When the singular noun ends in y, with a consonant before it, change the y to i and add -es. butterfly - butterflies army - armies diary - diaries country - countries treaty - treaties family - families

Chief - chiefs calf - calves safe - safes shelf -shelves For most nouns ending in f or fe, add -s. For some nouns ending in f or fe, however, change the f to v and add -es. Some nouns are the same for both singular and plural. deer sheep trout moose bass
