Archbishop Desmond Tutu Archbishop Desmond Tutu lived under the system of apartheid in South Africa… Apartheid Apartheid means ‘separateness’ White superiority and black inferiority. Black people were not allowed to vote. Black people had to live in separate areas. Black and white people were kept apart. E.g. Black and white people could not marry or use the same beaches. 90% of the land was owned by white people. The Dutch Reformed Church taught that God had created white people as the superior race.
