Dell’s Global Product Development Austin Design Centre – original design centre here; laptop, desktop, server and storage system development and documentation. China Design Centre - focuses on desktop system development, client system testing and laptop and desktop services. Bangalore Design Centre - focuses on software development, enterprise solutions, server development, international product support, test engineering and documentation Taiwan Design Centre - focuses on laptop and server development and data centre solutions. Singapore Design Centre - is home to Dell displays and Dell imaging. Dell’s Singapore Design Centre: Responsible for R&D development of all its displays and imaging products. 35,000-sq.ft. facility houses 125 engineers and designers. Develops around 20 new products every year including flat screen TVs, projectors and monitors. Dell also co-develop its products with various technology partners.

Types Of Display First came CRT monitors, which were first invented in 1887 by a German scientist. First came a commercial product in TN+Film (Twisted Nematic) + Film Display Most common consumer display type, due to being very low cost. Modern TN panels is sufficiently fast to avoid the shadow-trail and ghosting artifacts. IPS (In-Plane Switching) Developed by Hitachi in 1996 to improve on the poor viewing angles and colour reproduction of TN panels. IPS has since been superseded by S-IPS (Super-IPS, Hitachi in 1998) and and many other variations of IPS has been developed since then. MVA (Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment) Developed in 1998 by Fujitsu as a compromise between TN and IPS. Analysts predicted that MVA would dominate the mainstream market, but the cheaper and slightly faster TN overtook it. PVA (Patterned Vertical Alignment) and S-PVA (Super Patterned Vertical Alignment) Alternative versions of MVA technology offered by Samsung. Offer similar features to MVA, but with higher contrast ratios of up to 3000:1. CPA (Continuous Pinwheel Alignment) Developed by Sharp.

Is Dell Green As A Company? Dell drops to 8 th place, from 5 th in the Greenpeace “guide to greener electronics” with middle scores on chemicals, e-waste and energy issues. Dell fails to do better on chemicals because it has yet to put on the market products free of PVC and BFRs or commit to phasing out additional chemicals but has pledged to do this by Dell reports a recycling rate of 12.4%, based on sales 7 years ago. Dell have a “Global Recycling Policy”, which includes the following: Free end-of-life management for any brand electronic product when an individual purchases a new Dell product.. Free end-of-life management for any Dell-branded product from individuals, regardless of purchase of new product.

Legislation Effecting Dell 2408WFP Legislation Effecting Dell 2408WFP RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive) Effects electrical and electronic engineering equipment. RoHS is often referred to as the lead-free directive but restricts six substances; lead, mercury cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl, polybrominated diphenyl ethers. WEEE Directive (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive). Is a European Law in crated in February 2003, setting collection, recycling and recovery targets for all types of electrical goods. Almost all of Dell’s products such as the Dell 2408WFP are affected by the RoHS mainly because of the substitution of lead-based solders and finishes with lead-free alternatives. The WEE Directive also effects the recycling of the Dell 2408WFP but Dell has a “Global Recycling Policy” which covers what the directive addresses. RoHS has had an effect on reliability on products, where parts of products such as solder can develop “tin whiskers” which can cause short circuits. RoHS increases the health benefits to people and the environment by not using harmful substances.

Manufacturing Of The Dell 2408WFP Do TFT monitors contain toxic chemicals? Liquid crystals are not toxic, but a few may be an irritant, corrosive or sensitising. It is recommended that spills from cracked displays be washed off immedialtely. In the production of the Dell 2408WFP plastics and other materials used in the production of the monitor will have been wasted but looking at the monitor’s chassis it looks like it could be produced in modules and then assembled. Wasted plastic would have come from areas of the Dell 2408WFP such as: Ventilation slits Buttons The integrated USB hub and card reader The stand is made of steel which at the end of its life re-used as it is compatible with many other models of Dell monitors. Not every Dell 2408WFP is created 100% perfectly and faults do appear in manufacturing the screen and so some screens would have to be thrown away if they do not meet Dell’s criteria. Dell offer a “Premium Panel Guarantee” which offer a replacement monitor Dell offer a “Premium Panel Guarantee” which offer a replacement monitor with zero bright pixels. Even if one bright pixel is found, a free panel exchange is offered. doesn’t mind about the pixel issues or thrown away if the panel too many bad pixels. With Dell’s “Premium Panel Guarantee” the monitor would have to re- used by someone who doesn’t mind about the pixel issues or thrown away if the panel has too many bad pixels.

Dell 2408WFP Power Consumption Is the Dell 2408WFP environmentally friendly once it is produced and running? The Dell 2408WFP is Energy Star 4.0 compliant: It consumes less electricity. Uses fewer raw materials. Generates less heat than a CRT. Uses less than 2 watts of power when in standby mode. When turned on has a typical power consumption of 57 watts and uses a maximum of 110 Watts. The Dell 2408WFP is also slimmer and need less packaging than a CRT monitor and so saves the environment.
