Your Goal Content Goal: Learn location and correct fingering technique for Z and : (colon) Language Goal: Learn definitions, uses, and sounds of Z and colon In this PowerPoint you will learn about and practice Z & Colon If your writing goes off the page, just change the font size to a smaller one When you are done with the PowerPoint you will need to save it into your student folder.

What is a Colon? co ‧ lon1 [koh-luh n] A noun, the sign (:) used to mark a major division in a sentence, to indicate that what follows is an elaboration (or more detail), of what precedes (the first half) or to separate groups of numbers referring to different things, as hours from minutes in 5:30; or the members of a ratio or proportion, as in 1 : 2 : : 3 : 6.

Where is it and how do you key Colon? It’s on the same key as the semicolon It’s on the home row, under the pinky You have to hold down the left shift key with your left pinky finger and strike the key under your right pinky finger Fill in the rest of line 1. & line 2. with : space 1.: : : : 2.: : : :

The colon is often used to introduce a list of items. For example: You will need to bring three things to the party: some food, something to drink, and a small gift for the hostess. (type this sentence twice below) This sentence contains a list of three items. The first part of the sentence tells you that there will be three things; then the colon tells you "here are the three things".

You can also use a colon to introduce an explanation. For instance: I'll tell you what I'm going to do: I'm going to quit! Type the sentence 5 times

You can also use a colon to introduce a definition of something. For example: Elephant (noun): a large grey mammal found in Africa and India. Type the Elephant sentence 5 times

Where is the Z and how do you strike it? It’s down and to the right of the left pinky finger It’s directly to the right of the left SHIFT key You reach down and a little to right with your left pinky finger (fill in the rest of this slide with z then a, z then a) -zazaza
