Basic Writing ENGL 099 – Review #1 Instructor

Review  Identify the following word groups as a comma splice (CS) a run-on (RO), or a complete sentence (OK).  Make needed corrections using commas and coordinating conjunctions.

CS or RO or OK?  In 2012, a group of 82 students headed for the STI Technology Center with much optimism, a tough semester lay ahead.

That was a comma splice (CS).  To fix that sentence, add a conjunction after the comma :  In 2012, a group of 82 students headed for the STI Technology Center with much optimism, yet a tough semester lay ahead.

CS or RO or OK?  The students had expected to cross Career Avenue without stopping for traffic they were surprised when a Ford mustang raced along.
