3 What does it take to get a Preliminary CTE Credential? Three years of work experience directly related to each industry sector to be named on the credential. One year equals a minimum of 1000 clock hours and the experience may be full-time or part- time, paid or unpaid. At least one year of the required work experience must be within the last five years, or two years within the last ten years, immediately preceding the issuance of the preliminary credential. For the purpose of meeting the recency requirement, any of the following, or a combination of the following, may be cumulated to total 1000 clock hours: Work experience College-level related course work Non-college related course work Occupational internship Vocational teaching experience High School Diploma, Live Scan and Completed Application to the CCTC

4 What does it take to obtain a Clear CTE Credential? Possess a valid California Preliminary CTE Teaching Credential (three-year or five-year) Commission-approved program of personalized preparation that includes training in Specially Designed Academic Instruction Delivered in English (SDAIE) Verify completion of one of the following: a. Two years of successful teaching on the basis of the Preliminary CTE Teaching Credential in the industry sector(s) listed on the credential b. A Commission-approved program of advanced personalized preparation as determined by the program sponsor agency U.S. Constitution requirement by one of the following methods: a. Complete a course (at least two semester units or three quarter units) in the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution. Submit a copy of the course description for evaluation purposes. b. Pass an examination in the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution, given by a regionally- accredited college or university

5 What does it take to obtain a Clear CTE credential? Health education, including, but not limited to, the study of nutrition; the physiological and sociological effects of abuse of alcohol, narcotics, and drugs, and the use of tobacco. This requirement must also include training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) that covers infant, child, and adult CPR skills. Complete study in computer-based technology, including the uses of technology in educational settings Complete a Professional Preparation course of study through a commission approved program (CCTC )

6 But wait, might there be a easier way? Under the CTE Improvement Grant: – Identify teachers who already hold a clear single subject credential in the district – Survey these teachers to see who may have work experience or schooling in a field other than education. Priority is given to teachers who are currently teaching in a pathway that is expanding its offerings of CTE courses due to increasing enrollment in the pathway. – Teachers pay the CCTC application fee – OUSD provides the Foundations in CTE course at no cost to teachers. This course is offered through UC Berkeley extension and is the only course required for clearance for teachers who already hold a single subject credential.

7 But wait might there be an easier way? Teachers agree to a 12 month professional development program that includes 5 release days to perform industry externships during the school year and one week in the summer. Additional professional development around work-based learning, integration, PBL and industry advisory are also held throughout the school year. In addition to covering the cost of the CTE Foundations course, teachers receive a $2, stipend upon satisfactory completion of the professional development program. We are in the process of working with our human resources department to survey all clear single subject credentialed teacher in the district to determine eligibility for obtaining a preliminary CTE credential.

8 Benefits and Challenges  Teachers are already in the classroom and teaching-not starting from scratch with industry professionals who have no teaching experience.  Teachers lack a deep knowledge of industry that externships alone cannot replace.  Finding high quality externships for teachers during the school year and summer can be difficult  Having teachers with dual credentials (single subject and CTE) allows for better integration across content and the adoption of UC Curriculum Integration courses within pathways  Dual credentials allow for more flexibility in master scheduling and pathway program of study.
