Running the Government In order for governments to run and provide for the needs of its citizens, it needs funding. Those funds generally come from taxes. TAX: an amount of money that a government requires people to pay; it is used to pay for the things done by the government PROPERTY TAX: an amount of money that a government requires people to pay based on the land they own. The money collected on Texas property pays for public education. SALES TAX: an amount of money that is added to the price of goods and services REVENUE: money that is collected for public use by a government through taxes BUDGET: an official statement from a government about how much it plans to spend
