Power Point: 3 Recap of Spell-Write Online Concepts Class Lists Group of Words

*Recap of the ideas from Power Point 1 and 2: Words to Learn My Favourite Words *Recap slides have a blue background.

Flexible Functions effectively in a variety of classrooms and spelling programmes without being tied to one Broad Links the Spelling Programme to the wider classroom programme Spell-Write has been successful because it is:

Spell-Write’s core concepts are: Spelling is a writing skill We learn to spell to write, to communicate with clarity Spelling is best mastered in the context of learning to write An effective spelling programme is balanced and meets the needs of each student

It is easier to spell a word when: You know how to ‘Learn a Word’ You can use alphabetical lists to find a word You know the meaning of the word You use the word in your writing You know the structure of the word You understand the power and beauty of words You feel safe enough to take risks

An Intimacy with Words By taking responsibility for a growing set of words, children are able to develop an intimacy with words they treasure as their own. My Favourite Words

Words to Learn and how to choose the them The words have presented difficulty when writing The student is likely to use the word in their writing Learning the word is achievable for the student

Words to Learn Where do they come from? Writing Class Lists Group List My Favourite Words

Class Lists Current Topic List of Words in a Class List or in Group Lists for ability groupings Power Point 3: Groups of Words A set list of words categorised into groups E.g. Numbers, Seasons, Sport

Class Lists By creating a Class List related to something the class is already studying, or something that is currently capturing the interest of the class, increases the likelihood that the students will use the word in their writing. This is important because a word not used in a child’s writing is soon forgotten.

Class Lists Create a Class List using words from a current topic. Some argue that not breaking this list into groupings based on ability and just using a Class List, gives everyone exposure to interesting words. What do you think?

Class Lists Break the Class Lists into Group Lists to cater for a range of abilities.

Class Lists Use the Group Lists to focus on word skills.

A list of activities that teachers might want to use, to help their children explore their Class List, can be found under 'Word Study Activities' in the teacher's menu.

Groups of Words Groups of Words consist of the most common 1,000 words from the Alphabetical List, classified into 52 thematic groups. The main groups are Locations, Nature, Common Objects, People, Activities, Descriptions, and Common Contractions. Students may sometimes require a Group of Words to help them with their writing.

Students use these lists to find words when writing. Group of Words can also be used to focus on research skills.

Use Groups of Words To find words when writing based on a a known category. Class or group activities to develop research skills. E.g. Where would I find the word autumn? Why is 'autumn' in a category for 'Time' not 'Nature'?

Feedback of thoughts, experiences and comments for a Spell-Write Online Community.

Thank you for your time. And all the best to you and your class. Noeline Anderson The 20/20 Literacy Programme
