Early Descendants of the Pocket Watch  The earliest instruments that somehow managed to tell time were:  Water clocks  sundials  candle clocks  Clocks could easily weigh 500 lbs.

The first known existence of weight driven clocks… In the 13th century, weight-driven clocks were developed. These clocks used gears. The weight-driven clocks were only known to exist publicly displayed on church towers, city halls, and monasteries.

The emergence of the pocket watch… In the 16th century, clocks were produced using spring instead of weight. Used in pocket or around neck The portable clocks or the pocket watches were the first timepieces that the public could own. The pocket watches of the Renaissance were so technologically advanced that some of them even contained alarms.

The emergence of the pocket watch… Mechanisms were introduced to increase time-telling precision by adding a minute hand. The first recorded invention of a pocket watch was by Peter Henlein, a German locksmith, in the 1500's.

17 th Century pocket watches Pocket Watches really started to become popular. The box-like image was removed and was replaced by more rounded and slimmer cases. Clockmakers also became instant artists as they infused designs and craftsmanship to every pocket watch they made.

18 th Century pocket watches The watch continued to evolve. Jewels were used to increase the value of the watches….. Diamonds skyrocketed the prices Oil was used to lubricate the gears to work more efficient A third (second) hand was added

19 th Century pocket watches Golden days Great names were established The quality of the watch was better than ever.

Decline in popularity  The pocket watch was overpowered by the growing demand of the wrist-watch. Digital time keeping destroyed the pocket watch.
