A IMS OF THIS WORKSHOP Overview of exam requirements and content. Looking at sample exam questions and relevant question in past exams Weak areas in past exams How to prepare students for design option question

C ONTENT OF EXAM VCE Product Design and Technology Study Design 2012–2016 is the document used for the development of the examination. ◦ All outcomes of Units 3 and 4 will be assessed. ◦ All of the key knowledge and skills that underpin the outcomes are examinable. ◦ Plus knowledge of materials (Category 1 only), tools, equipment and machines related to their products Wednesday 6 th November 11.45am – 1.30pm.

A PPROVED MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT Students are permitted Lead and water-based coloured pencils, markers, pens, highlighters, erasers, sharpeners, and ruler Students do not require any type of shape template They are not allowed to bring: Any human shape templates Isometric or oblique grid paper. blank sheets of paper and/or whiteout liquid/tape. No calculator is allowed in this examination. Note also: these will not be provided on the exam!

B REAK - UP OF EXAM 2013 Sect A35-55 marks = approximately 45 minutes Short and extended answer questions that may require drawn and/or diagrammatic response, or multiple choice Sect B35-55 marks = approximately 45 minutes Short and extended answer questions may be stand-alone questions or multiple-part questions that draw on source material related to a design scenario/design brief that is provided with the examination paper. Marks allocated 90 marks

B REAK - UP OF PAST EXAMS Reading time – 15 minutes Writing time – 1 hour 30 minutes (90mins) Sect A3 questions 45 marks 3 questions 40 marks 2 questions 35 marks 3 questions 40 marks 12 questions 39 Sect B7 questions 45 marks 8 questions 50 marks 10 questions 50 marks 3 questions 50 marks 10 Questions 51 Total marks 90 marks 85 marks90 marks

U SING DATA TO IMPROVE THE WEAKER AREAS IN YOUR SCHOOL COHORT Look at weak responses across the state Highlight the responses that were below the state average in your class Look at the questions and revise those topics first, using Assessment Reports Then move onto the responses that were on a par with state average.

G ENERAL STUDY SKILLS FOR STUDENTS Compress and summarise what you know Link ideas Explain key ideas to some-one else Apply design and technology skills and knowledge to products everyday Practise drawing Exam: Use the information given in the question and stick to what you know READ the question! And look at marks allocated Refer to student handout document

G ENERAL EXAM VOCABULARY Explain – give reasons List – give a number of items Identify – to ascertain or point out Justify – validate, give reasons why State – brief statement Outline – summarise, define Describe – give an account Discuss – state positives and negatives Compare – give similar points for both Evaluate – discuss in more detail in relation to criteria or standards and suggest improvements Refer to handouts

W EAK AREAS IN PAST EXAMS RELEVANT TO THE NEW STUDY Design fundamentals and applications (now Product design factors on page 14 of Study Design) Risk assessment (improved in ‘08) Style, functional and technical obsolescence Knowledge of design elements and principles The design option – Quality of drawings Students drawing with biro or pencil Correct use of annotations ‘justifying’ answers What makes a ‘quality’ product or how to achieve it Scales/systems of manufacturing

A REAS OF S TRENGTH 2012 Highlighting the key client needs in the design options Promotion within the poster Understanding of how to use the boxes in the design brief

A REAS OF WEAKNESS 2012 Understanding of how Australian standards affect the production and construction of products Understanding of new terminology and ability to to apply this knowledge to questions Providing appropriately detailed answers to two-part questions.

2 % DID NOT ATTEMPT THE MULTIPLE CHOICE

Less than ¼ of students could link these concepts Note 3 points = 3 marks 2points = 2marks If students were able to write a DETAILED response they could also receive 3 marks

Students needed to ask themselves “how will I extract the information from the users?”

1 mark for method 3 marks for explanation LINKED QUESTION

Needed to mention either: 1.Product Design Factors (1) 2. Sustainability 3. Quality NOT TESTING THE ORIGINAL

PURPOSE: Safety, consistency and quality of products – NOT COST! DESCRIPTION

MUST RELATE TO SALES ! STUDENTS WHO DISCUSSED MORE THAN ON OF THE ‘Ps’ HAD THE FIRST ANSWER TAKEN NO LINK = IDENTIFY BUT DIDN’T LINK = 1

HAD TO REFER TO THE MODELS GIVEN = 0 NOT A DEFINITION = 0 NOT TO REPHRASE = 0 DID NOT HAVE TO REFER TO EGG RINGS!

NOTE: CANNOT ACCEPT PLANNED OBSCELENCE – NOT ON LIST

Students could not just name ‘Teflon’ and its qualities! – it’s the technology that made the material Emerging technology: laser technology, robotics, CAD, CAM, CNC & Rapid 3-d protoyping, lean manufacturing

This question was about students demonstrating an understanding of the INTERCONNECTEDNESS OF the two steps. Allowed good students to show a high level of understanding 6 marks = comprehensive understanding of the relationship of the two steps 4 marks= understanding of two points but not a comprehensive connection /interrelationship 2 marks = understanding of one step

1 + 3 marks

TEST = 1MARK WHAT & HOW = 2 MARKS

1 MARK 2 MARKS NOT VISUALISATIONS

Meets requirements = 3 marks Generally met the needs = 2 marks Barely met the need = 1 mark In the drawing Coloured pencils not pen

Prototype NOT acceptable!

NO DRAWING = NO MARKS
