Jesus The Master Teacher

Jesus The Master Teacher 1.“Never Man So Spoke” 2.“What Did Jesus Claim About Himself?” 3. “The Authority of Jesus’ Teachings”

Christ as Creator  One aspect of Christ not appreciated is His role in creation  “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth – Gen. 1:1

Christ as Creator  “The eternal Word became flesh and all things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that has been made” Jn. 1:1,14  “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him” Col. 1:16  “Has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds” Heb. 1:2

Christ as Sustainer  It is by the authority of Christ that all things “hold together” Col. 1:17  Jesus is said to “uphold all things by His powerful word” Heb. 1:3

Christ’s Incarnate Authority  Though divine as Son of God, did not “grasp” His status of “equality” with the Father - Phil. 2:5-10  He “emptied Himself”, assuming the role of a “servant” Phil. 2:5-10  His exercise of authority subservient to, consistent with the Father’s – Jn. 5:30  Authority that was given to Him by the Father – Jn. 17:2

Christ’s Incarnate Authority Matt. 8  Storm came upon them  Christ rebuked both the wind and sea  Instantly the wind ceased and there was a “great calm” upon the water Conditions of Nature

Christ’s Incarnate Authority Matt. 11  Fig tree had leaves but no fruit  “Be without fruit forever more” Conditions of Nature

Christ’s Incarnate Authority Matt. 17:24-27  Temple tax collectors asked Peter if Jesus paid that tax.  Instructed Peter to cast a hook in the Sea.  The 1 st fish caught would have a coin in his mouth to pay tax. Living Creatures

Christ’s Incarnate Authority Mk. 11  Jesus dispatched 2 disciples to Bethphage  They would find a donkey and a colt  The colt had not been broken in for riding – Mk. 11:2 Living Creatures

Christ’s Incarnate Authority Mk. 2:10  Man with palsy  “Son, your sins are forgiven”  “That you may know the Son of Man possesses authority on earth to forgive sins. I say to you arise, take up your bed, and go to your house” Sickness

Christ’s Incarnate Authority  3 cases when Jesus raised people from the dead - daughter of Jarius (Matt. 9) - widow’s son (Lk. 7) - Lazarus (Jn. 11)  The credentials for Jesus’ authority is impressive Death

Christ’s Incarnate Authority  Evil spirits  N.T. indicates they were under the control of Christ’s authority  They acknowledged Jesus’ authority – Mk. 5:7 Demons

Christ’s Incarnate Authority  “Messengers”  Heavenly created beings – Ps. 148:2-5  Christ exercises authority over these heavenly beings  “The Son of Man shall send forth His angels…” Matt. 13:41 Angels

Christ and the Law of Moses  One of the most common errors in Christianity is distinguishing the purpose of the O.T and N.T.  “For the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” Jn. 1:17  The Law was preparation for the coming of the new covenant – Jer. 31:31

Christ’s Incarnate Authority  “You have heard that it was said…” “but I say unto you…”  Only one with authority could say such  “the multitudes were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes” Matt. 7:28-29 Christ and the Law of Moses

Christ’s Incarnate Authority “When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish His kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of His kingdom forever” 2 Sam. 7:12-13 Christ’s Authority Prophesied

“In those days and at that time I will cause to grow up to David A Branch of righteousness; He shall execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. And this is the name by which she will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS” Jer. 33:15-16

Christ’s Authority Prophesied “Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH! From His place He shall branch out, And He shall build the temple of the LORD; Yes, He shall build the temple of the LORD. He shall bear the glory, And shall sit and rule on His throne; So He shall be a priest on His throne, And the counsel of peace shall be between them both.” Zech. 6:12-13

Christ’s Abiding Authority in Scripture “He who listens to you, is listening to Me, and he who rejects you is rejecting Me; and he who rejects Me is rejecting Him who sent Me.” Lk. 10:16

Christ’s Abiding Authority in Scripture  “I come to you…” Jn. 14:16-18  He pledged that their messages would be those of the Holy Spirit – Jn. 14:26  In their teachings they would be guided by the Holy Spirit into all truth – Jn. 16:13

But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven” Mk. 16:16 “He who believes and is baptized will be saved”
