What is Radiography?  A health science profession that actively interacts with the medical profession in the diagnosis and management of human illness through the provision of medical images

What do Radiographers do?  Radiographers use a wide variety of imaging modalities to create diagnostic images for analysis and interpretation by a radiologist  Radiographers inform patients about their examination, prepare them for it and position patients for the examination  Radiographers play a pivotal role in selecting and implementing the most appropriate examination protocol to deliver the lowest radiation dose to the patient whilst answering the clinical question

Diagnostic Imaging Modalities  Plain Radiography  Fluoroscopy  Digital Vascular Imaging (DVI)  Computed Tomography (CT)  Mammography  Bone Densitometry (DXA)  Orthopantomography (OPG)  Ultrasound (US)  Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)  (Colour key: X-rays, sound waves, radio waves)

A ‘Radiologic Department’  A pre-clinical on-campus medical imaging skills laboratory where students practice a defined range of radiographic examinations  Houses a clinical quality x- ray machine and anthro- pomorphic phantoms  Students practice taking x- rays with this phantom

Clinical Practice  Students attend hospital radiography departments for extended, full-time periods in each semester  They complete detailed workbooks during each visiting period  Competency based assessments are undertaken during each semester visit  Requires rotation to a variety of clinical departments to cover all modalities

Digital Imaging  Finally, this image is reconstructed from a CT scan of the head  The image is surface rendered to provide a realistic 3D image  The underlying structure is still there!
