Types of Energy

What is energy? Energy-the ability to do work.

Potential Energy -stored energy that an object has due to its position.

Potential Chemical Energy aka- Chemical Energy -stored energy that an object has due to its chemical composition.

Kinetic Energy the energy of motion.

Thermal Energy Heat energy.

Renewable Energy Renewable energy is natural energy which does not have a limited supply. Renewable energy can be used again and again, and will never run out.

Renewable Energy Solar-energy from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy.

Renewable Energy Hydroelectric-the production of electrical power through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water.

Renewable Energy Wind-the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy, such as using wind turbines to make electricity.

Renewable Energy Biomass (Biofuels)-Energy from organic materials made from plants and animals.

Non-Renewable Energy Non-renewable energy-Energy sources that cannot be replenished (made again) in a short period of time.

Non-Renewable Energy/Fossil Fuel Petroleum-Crude oil. This occurs naturally and is refined into gas, oil, various fuels, asphalt, and more.

Non-Renewable Energy/Fossil Fuel Coal-A natural dark brown to black graphite like material used as a fuel, formed from fossilized plants.

Non-Renewable Energy Nuclear Energy-energy released by a nuclear reaction, especially by fission or fusion.

Three HUGE Ideas

Energy Transfer The movement of energy from one place to another.

Energy Transformation The changing of energy from one form to another.

The Law of Conservation of Energy Energy is neither created nor destroyed. It only changes form! It’s the Law!
