SPIE Outreach Hands On Optics Proposal to the NSF: Seeks $1.8 million over 3 years Total project cost $2.47 million Optics-based enrichment activities for under represented (in SMET) 7th-9th graders Expanded to 8 states, 39,500 students by year 3 Collaboration among industry, educators, society volunteers

SPIE Membership Female percentage of SPIE membership increased from 4.5% to 8.5% between 1997 and In 2002 the number averaged around 9%.
