Waste management by YTV Teemu-Oskari Kiiveri 08A Nahla Hewidy 08C Tuomas Salminen 08A

What is YTV?  Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council  YTV takes care of the metropolitan area’s  Collecting the waste and taking it to the waste station.  Public transport

Waste management regulations  Waste management regulations concern the metropolitan area’s citizens, organizations and communities.  The purpose is to guide to a clean and pleasant living environment.  Waste management regulations specify the common principles of 17§ waste act. Waste act = jätelaki

The mission of waste management  The mission is to collect the waste and take it to a landfill site.  To decrease the environmental load.  YTV’s task is also to reuse the waste  Reusing requires that consumers should recycle their waste also. A Landfill site = kaatopaikka

Waste management at residential properties  Properties, which have organized waste collecting, must have the corresponding appliances to collect mixed waste.  Waste must be sorted in their own bins IF:  Organic waste: If there are over 10 apartments in the property, or if organic waste is produced over 50 kilos per week.  Recyclable cartons: If there are over 20 apartments in the property or if collectable cartons are produced over 50 kilos per week.  Recyclable cardboard: If collectable cardboard is produced over 50 kilos per week 7§

Waste management at residential properties  There are no regulations about separate collection of metal or glass.  Because recyclable paper is completely on producer’s responsibility, there are no regulations about what kind of properties have to have appliances for separate collection of recyclable paper.  Producer has to take care of paper reuse and organizing the collection stations.  Also electronics, tires, cars, batteries and partly packing materials are on producer’s responsibility.

Waste management at residential properties  There are no regulations separately about collecting glass and metal.  Properties have a possibility to negotiate about the collection of glass and metal with a private waste management company.  There are no regulations about energy waste collecting.  Properties which belong to YTV’s waste transport, can order voluntary energy waste collecting from YTV.

Sorting  Only 55% of household waste is recycled.  Sorting spares resources and it also creates new resources  Consumption and the waste at landfill sites reduce  Sorting hazardous waste is aiming at preventing toxic and explosive matter from ending up in the nature.  Waste can also be taken to sorting centers, collector cars, or a waste station Consumption = kulutus Hazardous waste = ongelmajäte

Waste-powered power plant...? (a plan for the future)  The power plant would produce heat and electricity.  The area would be visited by trucks per day and they’d bring mixed waste to the power plant and they would take combustion waste away.  The aim is to find a new usage for combustion waste.  Combustion waste would be taken to a waste management facility  The facility wouldn’t cause smell problems to environment.  Waste would be dissembled in a closed place.  Removal air would be led to combustion. Combustion waste = palamisjäte

The best waste is the unborn waste  If we utilized 100% of our waste, we would produce no waste at all.  By finding utilization possibilities, we can make that percentage as high as possible.  The waste itself isn’t harmful.  Production takes about 90% of raw materials  Prevention of waste production comes first.  Reusing and recycling come after that Raw material = raaka-aine

Waste management and climate change  Waste burdens climate as much as air traffic, but is easier to control  Recycling isn't enough - the amount of waste should be reduced  The biggest emissions are from landfill sites. Methane warms climate much more than carbon dioxide  Landfill gases should be collected and utilized  They could be used in the production of electricity, heating or mechanic energy
