Osborne Reef Disaster By: Daniel Pickard

What Happened? An attempt to make an artificial coral reef off the coast of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.1970s Created with materials such as tires, cinderblocks, and various other used or disposed of man- made products.

How was this a disaster? Various storms and hurricanes dislodged tires and destroyed all marine life that was living on the reef. Thousands of tires have been found on beaches all up and down the east coast.

What are we doing to try and fix what we’ve done? The majority of the retrieval efforts today are being made by U.S. Army and Navy Divers. Just in 2009, Navy divers retrieved over 73,000 tires off Florida’s Coast.

How can we prevent this from happening again? 1.We should NOT use the ocean as a way to dispose of our waste and used products. 2.We should encourage tire recycling to prevent this from ever happening again.

Summary: This shows that humans using the oceans as a way to dispose of waste is not a good idea. This also shows that there was no research put into the production of artificial reefs at the time of this disaster.
