Intercultural Literature C. Valverde

 Revisiting the definition of Multicultural Education – It's a progressive approach for transforming education that holistically critiques and responds to discriminatory policies and practices in education.  It is grounded in ideals of social justice, education equity, critical pedagogy, and a dedication to providing educational experiences in which all students reach their full potentials as learners and as socially aware and active beings, locally, nationally, and globally.  It is a philosophical concept built on the ideals of freedom, justice, equality, equity, and human dignity as acknowledged in various documents, such as the U.S. Declaration of Independence, constitutions of South Africa and the United States, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations (Gorski, 2010).

 Historically, individuals identifying as gay, homosexual, lesbian, queer, bisexual, and transgender have been discriminated socially, culturally, and politically, through the systematic denial of rights and privileges of the society.  The principles of equal rights for LGBTQ individuals derive from the U.S. Constitution, the U.S. Declaration of Independence, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations.  Multicultural education scholars respond to LGBTQ as sexual minorities with a history of intolerance, oppression, discrimination, as paralleled with ethnic/racial minorities.  Multicultural education is an educational response to challenge the discriminatory policies and practices of society.

 Terms that are on their way out… › Homosexual → gay › Sexual preference → sexual orientation › Sexual orientation → sexuality

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? Sex? & Gender?

 Gender Identity – (psychology) a person’s private understanding, definition, or experience of their own gender identity:  Usually Woman or Man, Male or Female  The acceptance of membership in “traditional” terms/definitions  In most Western societies, there exists a gender binary that enforces conformity into masculinity and femininity; social constructs.

GENDER FORMATION  Can be understood in four parts: › Understanding the concept of gender › Learning gender role stereotypes and standards › Identifying with parents › Forming gender preference/expression  Gender identity can form regardless of biological sex.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GENDER AND SEX ?  Gender is between your ____, sex is between your ____.  Gender is who you are inside, how you naturally feel (boy/girl, man/woman, masculine/feminine, both, neither)  Sex is determined by the biological components you are born with (male/female, intersex).

COMPONENTS OF SEXUAL/GENDER IDENTITY  Sex  Gender  Gender Expression  Sexuality
