Patterns of Intergroup Relations

Discrimination Denial of equal treatment to individuals based on their group membership. – Behavior Can be on a social or individual level. – Name calling – Rudeness – Acts of violence

Types of Discrimination Legal Discrimination- – Upheld by law – Apartheid in South Africa – Segregation in USA Institutionalized Discrimination- – An outgrowth of the structure of a society.

Prejudice An unsupported generalization about a category of people. – Attitudes Individuals form an image of a particular group and then apply the image to all members of the group.

Prejudice Stereotype- – An oversimplified, exaggerated, or unfavorable view about a group of people.

Prejudice Self-Fulfilling Prophecy- – A prediction that results in behavior that makes the prediction come true. Widely believed myth African American’s swimming ability was compromised by an innate deficit of buoyancy. Result: High rates of African American drowning due to high percentages of African Americans who never learned how to swim. + Lack of access to pools Many African Americans did not teach their children to swim.

Cullen Jones Gold medal winner and world record holder in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay.
