The Babylonians from southern Mesopotamia destroyed the First Temple built by the Jews in Jerusalem. 3. What does exile mean? Who were exiled to Babylon? Exile: forced removal from one’s native country. The Jews were exiled to Babylon. 4. Who allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalem to rebuild their temple? The Persian ruler Cyrus allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild their temple.

5. What happened to the Jews while they were under Roman control? The Jews revolted against Rome and the Second Temple was destroyed in the struggle. 6. What did Jewish teachers and religious leaders encourage their people to do after the second temple was destroyed? Jewish teachers and religious leaders encouraged their people to replace worship in the Temple with prayer, study, and good deeds. 7. What is Palestine and who controlled it? Palestine is an Arab region that was also the land the Jews had lived in 2,000 years earlier. Great Britain controlled Palestine after WWII.

8. What did WWII do to the Jews? Where did they go? During WWII the Jews were persecuted and were left homeless. They wanted to migrate to Palestine. 9. What did the United Nations do to Palestine in 1947? The United Nations divided Palestine—one part for Jews and another for Arabs. 10.What happened in May 1948? Jewish leaders declared Israel an independent state. Immediately following Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon declared war on Israel. 11. What is Zionism? Zionism is a Jewish movement that encouraged Jews to return to their homeland, which is called Zion.

12. What happened in the late 1800’s? Jews began immigrating to Zion and establishing colonies. 13. What did the Ottoman Empire lose after WWI ended? The Ottoman Empire lost control of Arab lands after WWI. 14. When did the Ottoman Empire decline? What took its place? By 1924 the Ottoman Empire no longer existed. The modern country of Turkey had taken its place. 15. Why was the “stage set for major conflicts” in the Middle East region after the Ottoman Empires defeat? During the war the Ottoman Empire sided with Great Britain, France, and Russia. After the Ottoman Empire’s defeat the land was divided between Great Britain and France which caused conflict.

16. What religions were tolerated by the Ottoman Empire? What did they have to do to worship as they pleased? The Sultans were tolerant of other religions, including Jews and Christians but they had to pay a tax that allowed them to worship as they pleased. 17. Why are neighboring countries of Iran and Iraq arguing about the territory between them? They have been arguing over the oil-rich territory between them. 18. What did President George W. Bush believe in the early 2000’s? George W. Bush believed that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was hiding dangerous illegal weapons.

19. What did the U.S. do on March 20, 2003? The United States joined Britain, Australia, and other allies and invaded Iraq. 20. Why is the U.S. interested in the Middle East? The U.S. is interested in the oil-rich territory which the Middle East has and the U.S. does not have.
