Driving Innovation Why Industrial Biotechnology UK is the 7 th largest producer of chemicals with sales of £60bn per year. UK has a strong underpinning capability in the biosciences e.g. the UK is ranked third globally for citation impact in the biological sciences Industrial biotechnology poses a significant opportunity for the UK’s chemical sector to maintain and increase its competitiveness in these global markets. Growing market: £150bn and £360bn by 2025, with the opportunity for the UK between £4bn and £12bn. Sustainable: industrial biotechnology can help to reduce CO 2 release; in 2009, the World Wildlife Fund put this figure at 2.5 billion tons by 2030.
