Elementary AVID! “Pathway to Success” Meadow View Elementary 5 th Grade

What is AVID? AVID is an acronym for: Advancement Via Individual Determination It is a program that has been used in middle and high schools across the nation, since It is a class that students can take, beginning in the 6 th. However, the AVID strategies have begun to trickle down to the elementary schools and is being implemented here, at MVES, for our 5 th graders!

What does AVID mean for my 5 th grader? High Expectations! -organized -focused -rigorous curriculum -independent worker/thinker -critical thinking -self-disciplined

Usage of a Planner! -goal-setting -planning ahead -prioritizing -being responsible for assignments; not dependent on parent/teacher

Note-Taking Skills in an Organizational Tool! (Notebooks) -organizing information -practicing neat handwriting -learning how to study -using notes as a resource/reference

Levels of Thinking/Questioning! -helps students understand different types of questions -helps students with End of Grade Testing

How can I support my student with AVID? -SIGN PLANNERS NIGHTLY! -Review homework assignments, upon completion. -Provide a good study area. -Talk with your child about upcoming projects and/or tests. -Help your student study from their notes. -Ask them to rewrite their notes and/or assignments, if they are illegible! -Read all letters and communication from the teacher and the school.

Additional Notes: Please attend the Onslow County AVID event on October 22 nd ! Visit Attend PEP conferences, if needed!

P.E.P. (Personalized Education Plan Who needs a P.E.P? scored below a Level 3 on an end-of-grade test or writing test is repeating a grade is at-risk due to behavior is at-risk due to excessive absences is at-risk of failing local promotion standards demonstrates at-risk academic performance in the school setting, at the end of the grading period

What is the PEP? a plan for focused intervention that is tailored to address a specific student's individual needs it is a working document that is monitored, reviewed, and updated the purpose is to use the student's strengths to improve the weaker areas parents should have responsibilities for activities at home to help the student improve and these activities should be included in the PEP it is developed as soon as it is recognized the student is falling behind goals and interventions change as needed
