Miracles Of Jesus “This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him” (John 2:11).

Miracles Of Jesus His Miracles

1) Several sources tell us He performed 37 total in the gospels. 2) What He said about the miracles. “Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves” (John 14:11).

3) The words of John. “And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:30-31).

4) Notice just a few. (1) Turns water into wine (Jn. 2:1-11). (2) Heals the nobleman’s son (Jn. 4:46-54). (3) Heals the infirm man (Jn. 5:1-15). (4) Feeds the 5000 (Jn. 6:1-13). (5) Walks on water (Jn. 6:16-21). (6) Restores sight to the blind man (Jn. 9:1-12). (7) Raises Lazarus from the dead (Jn. 11:1-45).

Miracles Of Jesus His Miracles

Miracles He Did Not Perform His Miracles Suggested

1) By Satan. “Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God’” (Matthew 4:3-4).

2) By James and John. “Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem, and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?” But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village” (Luke 9:51-56).

3) Peter’s reaction – Jesus’ words. “And suddenly, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?” (Matthew 26:51-54).

4) By Herod. “Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him nothing. And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. Then Herod, with his men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate” (Luke 23:8-11).

5) His enemies at the cross. “And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, “You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him” (Matthew 27:39-42).

Miracles He Did Not Perform His Miracles Suggested Why

1) Stones into bread? “If You are the Son of God”? (Matthew 4:3). Jesus didn’t need to prove anything to Satan. He showed Himself to be the Son of God by not turning the stones into bread. He trusted in His Father; obeyed Him and not Satan. It was not about bread, it was about listening to God in His word and not yielding to the adversary.

2) Fire from heaven? “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven…” (Luke 9:54). His purpose in coming was not to destroy but to save. His disciples needed this same type spirit. He was going to sent them into all the world with the gospel, every time their message was rejected were they going to want to do away with those who refused to listen?

3) Engage in a physical battle? “Put your sword in its place…Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of Angels?” (Matthew 26:52, 53). The Lord very plainly said His kingdom was not of this world, if it was then they would have fought (Jn. 18:36). It is a spiritual war against Satan and his forces.

4) Entertain a ruler? “Herod…hoped to see some miracle done by Him” (Luke 23:8). Jesus would not perform a miracle to entertain this ruler nor would He perform one to deliver Himself from the suffering He would experience at the hands of the men of war. At least four times in the gospel of Luke Jesus tells that He must suffer at the hands of sinful men.

5) Come down from the cross? “…save Yourself…He saved others; Himself He cannot save…” (Matthew 27:40, 42). The irony of these statements, they are true. If He saved Himself, which He could have, then He would not have saved others. It was through His death, the shedding of His blood, that the forgiveness of sin was made available to all. Prophecy would have been unfulfilled and salvation unattainable.

Miracles He Did Not Perform His Miracles Suggested Why Lessons

1) Life is more than just bread. “Every commandment which I command you today you must be careful to observe, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land of which the LORD swore to your fathers. And you shall remember that the LORD your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD” (Deuteronomy 8:1-3).

2) Rejected but steadfast. “And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 10:22). “Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!” (John 4:35).

3) Have a spiritual battle to fight. “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” (Ephesians 6:12-13).

4) We will suffer. “Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:12). “Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him” (2 Corinthians 5:9).

5) Motivation because of the cross. “For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me” (1 Corinthians 15:9-10).
