Hollands’ 6 Personality Types  Realistic  Investigative  Artistic  Social  Enterprising  Conventional

Realistic  Likes to work in a more hands on approach such as working with animals, tools and machines  Avoids social activities like teaching  Has good hands on skills like drawing, machines and mechanics  Interprets themselves as being realistic and practical  Values practical things like seeing and touching

Investigative  Keen to study and solve problems  Avoids leading, persuading or selling  Likes to solve problems via being precise and scientific

Artistic  Very creative and likes activities such as drama and music  Is not keen on repetitive activities  Sees self as being independent and expressive via being creative

Social  Likes to do things to help people  This includes teaching, nursing and providing information  They view themselves as helpful and friendly  Values helping people

Enterprising  Likes to lead and persuade people by selling ideas  Values success in leadership and politics  Sees self as very energetic

Conventional  Likes to work with numbers and statistics  Avoids any unstructured activities  Is good at working with recorded activities  Very ordered and planned traits

Is It Useful Within Our Current Situation?  It highlights our personality traits into specific titles  This allows us to potentially start to research into specific job roles  Helps students to become more orientated into the world of work

Positives Of Theory  There is extensive research surrounding the theory  Research on the theory is still continuing = Lots of evidence and support  Helps students to become more orientated into the world of work  Not too overwhelming  Provides a helpful way of understanding varied working environments

Limitations Of Theory  Studies do not show the level of satisfaction Holland claims to be achieved through the correct match  It does not consider the difference between a career and a job  It is not easy to classify people or jobs under Hollands system  Provides little support on how to choose jobs that match the traits
