NATURE, SCOPE AND METHODS OF POLITICAL SCIENCE

Political Science Its Meaning Politics Polis- city state Protagoras & Gorgias Plato, Aristotle, Socrates

Nature of Political Science Aristotle:- “Man is by nature a political animal and he, who by nature and not by mere accident is without a state, is either above humanity or below it” In Another word he says “ He, who is unable to live in society or who has no need because he is sufficient for himself, must be either a beast or god.

Why people live in the society? Why well governed state is needed?

Definition of Political Science Traditional definition: Gettell Says- “it is, thus a study in the past, present and future of political organizations and political theories.” Dr. Garner believes that- “political science begins and ends with the state

Modern definitions Almond, Powell & G. Bingham Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology Criticism about traditional definition of Political science Four Basic principals:-American political thinkers

Scope of Political Science 1. Study of state and government: can not be separated The state- an agency, The state- imaginary, government- practical

2. The study of association and institution: State as a supreme institution 3. Study of national, international problems and the political study of man City state Deals with national & international problems 4. Study of past, present and future development of the state Deals with past, present and future development of the state

Whether Political science is really a science? There is no uniformity in the principals of political science Political science does not strictly observe the relation of cause and effect as other sciences do Scientific method of observation and experimentation are not possibly applicable to political science In political science we do not find that exactness & absoluteness which we find in physics & chemistry.
