I.C.E. Y OUR Q UOTES

I NTRODUCE I ntroduce: quotes must be physically connected to your own writing. The easiest way to do this is to introduce it in one of the following ways: According to [Author’s name], “quote….” [Author’s name] writes, “quote…” As stated in [name of the text], “quote…”

C ITE C ite: when you take information from a text, you must cite it (or attribute it to/ mention its original source). You will do this for direct quotes and facts from the text that you put in your own words. When in doubt, cite it! Put the citation at the end of the sentence containing a quote. Include the author’s last name and the page number (Author #) (Smith 27)

E XPLAIN E xplain: in order to develop your writing, you must tell the reader something about the quote. So every time you introduce and cite a quote, you need to give 2-3 sentences that explain why the quote is important or how it relates to your topic.

E XAMPLE 1: William Smith writes, “The young boy looked through the door without making a sound” (Smith 27). When the boy is peering through the door, he sees what his neighbor has been hiding all of these months. This is the climax of the story because he finally starts to solve the mystery.

E XAMPLE 2: In The Moonwalker the author writes, “The astronaut stepped out of his craft for the first time, feeling the full effects of weightlessness” (Jones 12). When the astronaut steps out of his spaceship, he is amazed by the way it feels to be weightless. He had never experienced that before, and it was very unique.

W E D O Levi is writing a paper about the increasing violence in Santiago City. Use ICE to craft a paragraph using evidence from the snippet below: “Since 2012, violence in Santiago City has tripled, contributing to more than 200 deaths in the past six months alone. Compared to 2011, that’s 100 more deaths in six months than usual. Local law enforcements have recently announced plans to properly train more academy recruits.” – Wallace Stevens, “The State of Santiago: Has Violence Gone too Far?”

W E D O Christina is writing a paper about the theme of unbreakable friendship in the book The Forest Fighters. She feels there is a strong piece of evidence that she can use for her next paragraph. “Lea, Daven, and Crucian stood side by side, hand in hand. The forest dragon loomed overhead, his nostrils flaring. They had been through so much together, and all three were prepared to fight till the end. No matter the obstacle, they’d withstand it as long as they knew they were all supporting one another.” –Laura Salzo, The Forest Fighters

Y OU D O Gemini is writing an essay about the theme “love conquers all” in Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet”. She has picked out a set of lines from page 487 she’d like to use, but doesn’t know which one fits the theme. Identify, cite, and explain a line that would fit the theme “love conquers all”. “Juliet: And the place death, considering who thou art, / If any of my kinsmen find thee here. Romeo: With love’s light wings did I o’erperch these walls, / For stony limits cannot hold out, / And what love can do, that dares love attempt. / Therefore thy kinsmen are no stop to me.”

Y OU D O Eric is writing an essay about the benefits of video games, and plans to use a piece of evidence from Philip J. Fry’s article “Video Games are for Nerds”. Find a piece of evidence from the snippet below and use the ICE formula to create a solid paragraph. “While video games can in fact have negative side-effects, advantages such as improved hand- eye coordination have been proven, as well. One needn’t become addicted to video games to find its many benefits.” – Philip J. Fry, “Video Games are for Nerds”

Y OU D O I am writing a paper on the benefits of friendship. I want to use the following quote. Using what you’ve learned, create a topic sentence, and I.C.E. the following quote. “What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies.” – Aristotle Topic sentence: I.C.E.:

Y OU D O You have been asked to write a paper about betrayal. Using what you’ve learned, create a topic sentence, then I.C.E. the quote. “It is easier to forgive an enemy than to forgive a friend.” – William Blake
