DO NOT SIT THERE AND NOT UNDERSTAND! SOME OF THIS STUFF MIGHT SEEM A LTTLE WIERD AND CONFUSING. IF IT IS YOU MUST TELL ME! DO NOT BE EMBARRASED. I WILL EXPLAIN IT SO YOU CAN UNDERSTAND. Once again: If you don’t “get it” then you must either… 1. Say so or 2. Ask a question Once again: If you don’t “get it” then you must either… 1. Say so or 2. Ask a question

NEVER BE AFRAID OR EMBARASSED TO ASK A QUESTION! ASKING QUESTION ABOUT WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW OR UNDERSTAND IS HOW YOU LEARN. DON’T WORRY ABOUT WHAT OTHERS THINK OR THINK THEY KNOW. THAT DOESN’T HELP YOU. NEVER BE AFRAID OR EMBARASSED TO ASK A QUESTION! ASKING QUESTION ABOUT WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW OR UNDERSTAND IS HOW YOU LEARN. The second unit we cover is the one you can actually see when you use the computer… THE UNIT

The OUTPUT UNIT of the computer gives out processed information. It allows a user to take processed information out of the computer by using output devices.

Just one “heads up”, word of caution or word of warning to you about INPUT and OUTPUT devices. Some devices are INPUT ONLY Some devices are OUTPUT ONLY but There are some devices that can act like or be used as both INPUT and OUTPUT Just one “heads up”, word of caution or word of warning to you about INPUT and OUTPUT devices. DEVICES OR EQUIPMENT THAT CAN ONLY BE USED TO OUTPUT INFORMATION

You should remember that these are devices that are used only to take information from or out of the computer. They can’t be used for input. Here are some OUTPUT only devices…

Visual display unit A visual display unit (also called VDU, monitor, or screen) offers a two- dimensional visual presentation of information.

 Cathode ray tube  Flat panel display  Vector display  Liquid Crystal Display  Storage tube

Printer Printers produce a permanent hard copy of the information on paper.

 Laser printer  Inkjet printer  Electrostatic printer  Thermal printer  Impact printer

Speaker A speaker can be used for various sounds meant to alert the user, as well as music and spoken text.

Head mounted display A head-mounted display or Helmet mounted display, both abbreviated 'HMD', is a display device, worn on the head or as part of a helmet, that has a small display optic in front of One eye (monocular HMD) or each eye (binocular HMD). CAN YOU THINK OF ANY OTHERS?

RESOLUTION When you talk about monitors and printers you have to talk about resolution. It means how sharp or clear an image is being reproduced.

When you look at an image on the monitor screen you’re really looking at tiny dots called PIXELS which stands for PICTURE ELEMENTS.

A square inch section of the screen is made up of a grid of dots-72 pixels by 72 pixels. This is called RESOLUTION or Dots Per Inch (DPI). The more dots you have the sharper and better the picture you get.

The quality of a printer is measured in DPI (Dots Per Inch) just like a monitor. Professional printing is done at 1200 or 1400 DPI which is called high resolution. The quality of a printer is measured in DPI (Dots Per Inch) just like a monitor. Professional printing is done at 1200 or 1400 DPI which is called high resolution.

Laser printers print at 300 to 600 DPI which is considered good resolution.

COLOR When computer monitors and printers reproduce color they use two different systems.

A monitor uses light to transmit a picture. All the colors you see on the screen are made from three different colors of light: Red, Blue, Green. That’s why some old monitors were called RGB. A monitor uses light to transmit a picture. All the colors you see on the screen are made from three different colors of light: Red, Blue, Green. That’s why some old monitors were called RGB.

When you add all three colors you get white light. Different percentages of each of the three colors give you all the other colors.

For printing on paper, the CMYK color system is used, not RGB. Combinations of cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink make up all the colors.
