RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS: Teams will pick a category they would like to compete in They can choose between competing from points Only one square can be chosen once and then eliminated from play If the group get the answer right they earn the amount of points as instructed and the game moves on to the next group. If the group answers wrong, the next team has a chance to respond and earn the points There are unknown bonus points hidden in the game where you can get up to 4x the amount of the distributed point value (answer a 100 point question, you get 400 points). YOU MUST GET THE BEGINNING QUESTION RIGHT IN ORDER TO RECEIVE BONUS POINTS! If the question is answered wrongly, the next team will not be able to receive bonus points There are also bonus questions worth up to 200 points each. YOU MUST GET THE BEGINNING QUESTION RIGHT IN ORDER TO MOVE ON TO THE BONUS QUESTION! The team who has the most points at the end wins! Good luck!

PROPERTIES OF WAVES: 200 points What is… the time it takes a wave to complete one full circle the time it takes a wave to complete one full circleAND to move or travel back and forth between two points? to move or travel back and forth between two points? ANSWER

ANSWER: Period is the time it takes for the wave to complete one circle Period is the time it takes for the wave to complete one circle Oscillation is to move or travel back and forth between two points Oscillation is to move or travel back and forth between two points

ANSWER How is sound related to energy and what type of energy is it related to (chemical, electrical, potential, etc.)?

ANSWER: Sound is a form of kinetic energy because motion is involved in the travel of sound.

TYPES OF WAVES: 100 points What ‘substance’ is carried through transverse waves? What do longitudinal waves carry? ANSWER

ANSWER: Transverse waves carry light. Longitudinal waves carry sound.

Properties of Waves Types of Waves Sound Electromagnetic Spectrum and Light Wave Interactions Eye and Ear

TYPES OF WAVES 400 points Define Longitudinal Waves ANSWER

ANSWER: A push and pull wave that sends vibrations parallel to the medium.

Properties of Waves Types of Waves Sound Electromagnetic Spectrum and Light Wave Interactions Eye and Ear

Can longitudinal waves be present in outer space? Why or why not? How about transverse waves? ANSWER TYPES OF WAVES 200 points

ANSWER: Longitudinal waves cannot be present Longitudinal waves cannot be present in outer space because in order to have sound you need air. Transverse waves can because it needs no medium.

Properties of Waves Types of Waves Sound Electromagnetic Spectrum and Light Wave Interactions Eye and Ear

TYPES OF WAVES 300 points How many types of electromagnetic radiation are there? ANSWER

ANSWER: Seven: Radio waves Radio waves Gamma rays Gamma rays X-rays X-rays Micro waves Micro waves Infrared/heat waves Infrared/heat waves Visible light Visible light UV rays UV rays

Properties of Waves Types of Waves Sound Electromagnetic Spectrum and Light Wave Interactions Eye and Ear

TYPES OF WAVES 500 points What’s the difference between Electro- Magnetic waves and Mechanical waves? ANSWER

ANSWER: Not only are EM waves transverse and Mechanical waves longitudinal, but EM waves do not need a medium and Mechanical waves do.

Properties of Waves Types of Waves Sound Electromagnetic Spectrum and Light Wave Interactions Eye and Ear

SOUND 100 points What is the speed of sound? ANSWER

SOUND 500 points Give the definition of the Doppler Effect ANSWER

ANSWER: The Doppler Effect is an ‘apparent’ change in frequency (pitch) due to the motion of an object.

What is happening when you break the sound barrier? ANSWER

ANSWER: Breaking the sound barrier is when all the waves are piled behind the object (sonic boom)
