UNDERSTANDING GRAPHS Learning the Skill

GRAPHS Three main types of graphs present numerical information. 1. Line graphs – record changes in data over time. The vertical axis (y-axis) shows units of measurement, and the horizontal axis (x-axis) shows intervals of time. 2. Bar graphs - use bars of different lengths to compare different quantities. 3. Circle graphs – show the relationship of parts to a whole as percentages.

UNDERSTANDING A GRAPH Read the graph title to identify the subject Study the labels to understand the numerical information presented. Study the information presented and the use of colors and patterns Compare the lines, bars, or segments, and look for relationships in order to draw conclusion.

CLIMOGRAPH A graphical representation of the climate at a certain location. Temperature Precipitation Temperature is represented by a line graph Precipitation is represented by a bar graph

C LIMOGRAPH Annual Climatology: Dallas, TX (DAL) Elev: 440 ft Lat: 32 o 51'N Long: 96 o 51'W

POPULATION PYRAMID A graphical illustration that shows the distribution of various age groups in a human population. Usually represents a country or region. The perfect chart forms a pyramid. This means that the country is healthy. Consists of two back to back bar graphs. One side represents males and the other females.

LINE GRAPH – RECORDS CHANGES IN DATA OVER TIME

BAR GRAPH – USES BARS OF DIFFERENT LENGTHS TO COMPARE DIFFERENT QUANTITIES

CIRCLE GRAPH – SHOW THE RELATIONSHIP OF PARTS TO A WHOLE AS PERCENTAGES

PRACTICE Go to page 28 of Geography book and answer the 4 questions under “practicing the skill” Complete the assignment in “applying the skill” (remember what type of graph is for what type of information).
