1 Inquiry Science Chapter One MYSTERY SPORTS DRINK

MYSTERY SPORTS DRINKS II: TESTING, TESTING, TESTING 2  I can write a testable question to guide my investigation about sports drinks  I can design an investigation to answer my testable question  I can collect evidence to support an explanation that answers my testable question Write the title/thread on a new page. Copy the Learning Targets:

INTRODUCTION 3 Text, page 20 Does the mystery sports drink contain ingredients that are beneficial to athletes? Read the Protocol “Benedict’s Test” p. 22 Read the Protocol “Electrical Conductivity Test” p Read the Protocol “Evaporation Test” How will each Protocol help you to answer your testable question? Is this a good testable question? Can we improve it?

CAUTIONS 4 Be careful using the hot plates. Use the rubber mitts to pick up anything that has been heated. Do not leave the evaporating dishes unattended on the hot plate. Once the liquid has evaporated, remove the dish using the mitt. Wear goggles during your investigation. Dispose of all liquids in the sinks. Rinse and clean all equipment before putting it back in the kits. Make sure your lab station is clean and tidy. Points will be deducted for leaving a mess behind!

PROCESS AND PROCEDURE 5 page 21 With your partner, answer Process and Procedure Steps #2-4 in your notebook. When you are finished, show me your notebooks. Then you may begin testing Complete steps 5-9. Answer all questions in your notebook. Remember to either write the question, or answer in such a way that the question is implied. Read “Background on Controlled Experiments” p. 26 Complete R&C #1-4
