FAMOUS FAILURES Watch the video below

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS

WHO ARE SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS? They are motivated learners who accept some responsibility for their own education. They understand that success comes as a result of their own efforts. They pay attention and concentrate on school related tasks. Successful students can ignore or reduce distractions in the environment or from their own thoughts that can interfere with learning.

Successful students have the skills to understand the ideas presented in both the classroom and textbooks. They know how to get help if they have trouble understanding. Successful students can remember the facts and ideas they need to achieve in school.

TIPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL SUCCESS 1.Go to class 2.Find a quiet place to study 3.Turn off distractions (T.V., radio, computer, video games, phone), while you study 4.Take hard subjects 5.Get involved in school teams, clubs, and/or activities 6.Hang out with students who go to class

YOUR WORK HABITS: A SELF-ASSESSMENT Understanding the way you learn and the kinds of work habits you have is an important part of preparing for high school. Good work habits will help you succeed. Do this quick self-assessment and see where there is room for improvement.

Work habits that will help me succeed: I already do this I could do better I do my homework every night I complete projects on time I participate in class discussions I ask questions when I don’t understand I study for tests I get extra help when I need it I cooperate with teachers I work well with classmates

CLASSROOM SUCCESS Go to EVERY class and get there ON TIME Pay attention Take a notebook, textbooks, planner and all other required materials to class (pencils, pens, calculator, etc.) Record any homework assignments before you leave the classroom. Take good notes

Ask questions if you do not understand what is being said Complete your homework each day. Complete all assignments and projects

HOW TO TAKE GOOD NOTES Your notes help you remember which concepts your teacher stressed and give you an idea as to what will be covered in the unit tests and final exam. Note taking also helps you concentrate on what the teacher is saying.

Copy everything on the board—e.g. outlines, graphs, diagrams, drawings, etc. Learn and use standard abbreviations to make note taking easier and faster Leave space to add missing ideas later.

HOMEWORK AND STUDY SKILLS Homework is an extension of the work you do in the classroom. It reinforces what you have learned in school, helps you become independent learners, and encourages discipline and responsibility You need a good place to do your homework You need the proper supplies to complete your assignments

ORGANIZING YOUR TIME Set aside a special time each day for your work. Choose times when you are most alert. Set yourself a goal to finish within a certain time limit Do not leave assignments until the night before they are due, because you are unlikely to have access to the supports you need to complete the assignment. Plan ahead!

WHY STUDY? In public school you learned things without having to think about it too much - in a way you were being prepared for work in a senior school In later grades the process continued but became more difficult - you had to start thinking for yourselves more and more When it comes to studying in High School, you will be expected to think for yourself almost all the time - your teachers will help you all the way but YOU will have to take control of your own learning

PREPARING FOR EXAMS AND TESTS Make sure you have all your notes in order and that important information is highlighted. Make a list of things you need to know for the test. Organize your study time to prepare well. Do not cram the night before

TAKING AN EXAM OR TEST It is important to relax. Breathe deeply several times before you even look at the paper. Read over the entire test. Calculate how much time you will spend on each question. Put checks by the easier questions and do those first. –This will give you a sense of accomplishment and of confidence

Always make sure you answer each question. –This is one reason why time management is very important. If you get stuck, skip that question, and leave it until the end. Do not be afraid to ask the teacher if you need to have things explained further. Have an extra pen / pencil with you.
