Pro-democracy demonstrator beaten

Hong Kong authorities have vowed to conduct an impartial investigation into a video which appears to show several plainclothes police officers beating up a detained pro- democracy demonstrator. The widely circulated video shows officers carrying the man to a dark corner, where he's laid on the ground and repeatedly kicked and punched while others stand around, apparently keeping watch. Hong Kong's Secretary of Security told reporters on Wednesday the "officers involved will be temporarily removed from their current duties." The victim has been identified as Ken Tsang, a member of the Civic Party, who's also a social worker and a member of the 1,200 member election committee that choses Hong Kong's leader. His lawyer stated, “It was unprovoked and unnecessary for anyone to use that kind of violence on an arrested person." He said some people had accused Tsang of pouring water on police, but "whatever he was doing he was already arrested, his hands were cuffed and the proper procedure was to take him into custody and deal with him in accordance with the law.” Amnesty International called for the prosecution of any officers found to have acted unlawfully.

In Other News A second health care worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital who cared for Thomas Eric Duncan has tested positive for Ebola, health officials said Wednesday -- casting further doubt on the hospital's ability to handle Ebola and protect employees. A 10-year-old boy killed a 90-year-old woman in the home of the boy's grandfather. Tristen Kurilla, a fifth grader, made the chilling confession Saturday, police said. Kurilla is being held at the Wayne County Correctional Facility and charged as an adult with criminal homicide. The boy is separated from adult offenders and is being constantly supervised. The boy admitted to grabbing a wooden cane, holding it against 90-year-old Helen Novak's throat for several seconds and punching her in the throat and stomach. Kurilla told police he was angry at Novak because she had yelled at him when he entered her room. He said he wanted to ask her a question. Were you trying to kill her? the trooper asked the boy."No, I was only trying to hurt her," Kurilla replied, according to the affidavit. The boy was ordered to be held without bail after his arraignment and is set to appear in court October 22.
