Types of Governments

Monarch – Absolute – – King and/or queen has total control over the country. They are not limited by laws or other bodies of government -Constitutional/Limited -The king and queen are limited by the laws and must behave according to it. -Ex. United Kingdom

Dictator ******(also called Autocracy) –Person who rules with complete and absolute authority.

Democracy –Type of government in which the people of a nation either rule directly or elect officials who rule on their behalf. –Example: U.S.

2 forms of Democracy 1. Direct Democracy : all voters in a community meet in one place to make laws and decide what actions to take. –(for small communities) 2. Representative Democracy : the people elect representatives to carry on the work of government for them. (The people consent to be ruled by their elected leaders)…this is called a Republic.

Oligarchy A government controlled by a small group of people. Imperialistic South Africa (Afrikaners)

Aristocracy Government controlled by the wealth of a country The wealthy offer little or no chance for poorer people to break out of poverty and change their social status –Caste system in India

Theocracy A government controlled by the interpretation of religious law i.e The Taliban- based off of interpretation of Muslim Law
