CIS Action Items 10 th Cross-Calibration Workshop Observatoire de Paris, Nov. 2009
1. Replies to the recommendations of the 2009 Peer Review Done. New Version 1.1 of the CIS UG prepared. Done Done. New section 6.3 added, including an example that illustrates the influence that an inappropriate mode selection can have in the CODIF and HIA data
Examples of inter-anode calibrations included in the Calibration Report. Work in progress for including more information. Table added in section 3.2 of the User Guide.
Work in progress in transferring the caveats from.html to.cef and in updating relevant information (cf. Presentation by Alain). Action open.
Figure label corrected CIS – WHISPER density cross-calibration are being performed throughout the mission. Most recent cross-calibration examples available, to be included in the report. WHISPER / CIS density ratio does not change as a function of mission time: that is why we cross-calibrate! For a statistical analysis of the WHISPER / HIA ratio, cf. presentation by Adrian.
Counting statistics have e a multi-parameter dependence on: Local space phase density MCP efficiency ageing Time-binning Solid-angle binning No simple graph could provide an answer. This is why the ion raw counts are an archived product, so that the user can calculate counting statistics depending on his/her analysis and the binning applied.
Continuous action. Same action as PR09-CIS11, cf. Previous slides. CODIF inter-anode calibration included. HIA inter-anode calibration to be included in the report.
Low density plasma / very low energy plasma: cf. Caveat on space charging effects. Underestimating ion density by HIA when in the solar wind and in a magnetospheric mode: analysis shows dependence on both solar wind density and temperature. cf. presentation by Adrian. New HIA moments data set uses CAA FGM data, and provides complete pressure tensor.
Action open on the preparation of a quality factor dataset. Cf. presentation by Alain. Cf. action above. It is an action to the project.
Same action as PR09-CIS15 and PR09-CIS16 ! CIS PP use the same calibration parameters as CIS CAA data, after they are re-processed. CIS and RAPID use the same units cf. presentation by Elena
Done Sub-spin timing has never been used by the CIS team: It is not possible when distribution functions are accumulated over more than one spins.
2. Replies to the recommendations of OR4 cf. presentation by Alain on delivery schedule Continuous action cf. previous slides
New Version 1.1 of the CIS UG prepared, cf. previous slides Continuous action, cf. presentations by Chris and Adrian
3. Action Items from Cross-Calibration Meetings CC8-AI-22 CIS/PEACE « to include a quality factor to their moments data to filter out poor quality data, e.g., when only noise is observed by CIS due to low ion flux measurements, when one can assume strong noise from photoelectrons in PEACE, etc. The quality factor needs to be specified also in the user Guide » Action open. Cf. presentation by Alain. CC8-AI-41 CIS « to define/provide a special HIA moments dataset needed with caveat & quality index flag » This dataset is now under preparation. Cf. Presentation by Alain. CIS08-AI-3 « to produce a caveat dataset» It is being prepared out of the CIS caveats file, available online at the CIS web page. Cf. presentation by Alain.
CIS08-AI-8 « to provide the new datasets on the omni-directional fluxes from HIA and CODIF; they will be used for the simple datasets» Done CIS08-AI-9 CIS08-AI-10 and CC9-AI-10 « To provide the estimate how the HIA background noise is changing in time. Such estimates would be highly useful to the user in order to understand when the count rates are meaningful in low-count rate regions» « To provide the estimate how the CODIF background noise is changing in time. Such estimates would be highly useful to the user in order to understand when the count rates are meaningful in low-count rate regions» See examples following.
CC9-AI-11 « to perform a statistical analysis on correction factor, i.e. the ratio of HIA/WHISPER» Two different issues: Correction factor: cf. following slide HIA / WHISPER ratio statistical analysis: cf. presentation by Adrian
CC9-AI-16 (Due : 10 th Cross-Call): « to study , 9-10 UT, and to find the reason for low densities in HIA and CODIF wrt Whisper data» These data were taken in the solar wind, while the instrument was operating in a magnetospheric mode. This results in a partial instrument saturation, and thus in underestimated density values, a situation clearly identified in the CIS instrument data caveats. Action closed.
