THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES Colonization & Settlement

Let’s review… What do you remember about the Jamestown Settlement? The Virginia Company? Push factors for coming to Virginia? Pull factors?

1) The majority of people who settled in the Southern Colonies went for economic reasons. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ 2) In the beginning, people hoped to find gold & other riches. 3) Later, they hoped to make a profit selling tobacco. Let’s Review…

What comes to mind when you think of the word Pilgrims ? Turn & Talk

A person who makes a long journey for religious reasons. Pilgrim

1) What push factors may have influenced the Pilgrims, or Separatists, to migrate to North America? Pull factors? Turn & Talk

1) The Pilgrims came to North America mainly for religious, NOT economic reasons. Freedom of Religion : The right to have ANY religious beliefs or NO religious beliefs at all. Pilgrims

1) In the early 1600s, people in England had to belong to the Church of England, which was headed by the King of England. 2) Those who refused to join were persecuted, which meant they were put into jail or mistreated. Pilgrims

1) In 1608, one group of people who did not want to attend the Church of England decided to separate from the church. 2) The became known as the Separatists. Pilgrims

1) In 1620, this group requested and won a charter from the Virginia Company. 2) Some of their members were afraid to go & in the end, less than 40 Separatists planned to go. Pilgrims

1) Do you think this was a large enough group to begin a new settlement? 2) Why or why not? Turn & Talk

1) The Separatists, needing more people to join them, signed up other English people who did not share their religion. 2) The Separatists called these people the “Strangers”. 3) They wanted to go to North America to find a better life. Pilgrims

AYER/VIEW/ASSETGUID/02DCD9DC-FE28- 4C33-9E18-09DC5698ED82 The Journey

1) 2 ships, the Speedwell & the Mayflower were loaded with supplies for the new settlement. 2) Which of these ships are you familiar with? What do you think happened to the other ship? Pilgrims

 The group had planned to leave in August of 1620, but each time they set out, the Speedwell began to leak & they had to turn back.  Finally, they set sail in the Mayflower alone on September 16 th,  The ship was very crowded with 30 sailors, over 100 passengers, and 2 dogs! “The Journey”

 The journey was long & difficult. There was not enough fresh water. They ate mainly hard biscuits, dried beef, & moldy cheese!  Terrible storms came up & blew them far to the north.  After 66 days at sea, they saw land but it was not the Virginia Colony. They were far to the north in the area that is now Massachusetts. “The Journey”

1) The Pilgrims decided to stay in the area of Massachusetts instead of trying to get to the Jamestown area of the Virginia Colony. 2) This presented them with a problem… they were in an area with no government! Pilgrims

1) Before stepping off the ship, they decided to write an agreement that would create a government for them and keep order. 2) This type of agreement was called a “compact”. Pilgrims

 An agreement “Compact”

 An agreement reached by the Pilgrims to live according to a set of laws. “The Mayflower Compact”

1) The Mayflower Compact was based a the core democratic value: the common good. Pilgrims

 The fundamental beliefs that unite all Americans “Core Democratic Values”

 People working together for the benefit of everybody. “The Common Good”

1) The Mayflower Compact was the first example of self-rule in the English Colonies. 2) Self-rule was a very new idea. Pilgrims

 When people make, follow, & enforce the laws they create for themselves. “Self-Rule”

1) The group now began to look for a place to settle. 2) They wanted a safe harbor, fresh water & good soil. 3) On December 26, 1620, the group went ashore. This was officially the beginning of the Plymouth Colony! Pilgrims

1) How do you think the fact that they landed in late December affected them? Turn & Talk

1) Read “The First Winter & Spring” with partners & fill out 3 key ideas. Early Days of Plymouth

1) The Pilgrims & the Wampanoag's lived in peace during this time. 2) This benefited both groups. Plymouth Colony

1) In the Fall of 1621, the Pilgrims gathered for their first harvest. It was decided to celebrate the harvest & give thanks for it. The First Thanksgiving?

1) A festival was held for 3 days that included the 53 English colonists & 90 Wampanoag men. 2) It included feasting & “recreations” The First Thanksgiving?
