INFORMAL S ANSWERING THE QUESTION ADEQUATELY

UNDERLINE THE RELEVANT PARTS OF THE FOLLOWING EXAM TASK It’s great to hear you’re coming to the UK to work this summer. And to answer your question, yes, of course I’ll be happy to find you a place to live. Let me know how long you want it for and if you want somewhere quiet or near the centre. Speak soon, Chris Put yourself in the shoes of Chris - what does he need to know? What information will help him to find the right kind of accommodation for you? Have you already been in contact with him?

You have obviously been in contact with him recently. You have already said that you are coming to the UK to work, so you probably know what job you are going to do. What Chris needs to know in order to help you is 1) the approximate dates of your stay and 2) what area of town you would like to stay in. Some details of the kind of place you need would be helpful too.

So you don’t need to begin by asking Chris about his family / girlfriend / cat, or telling him about your exams. You already did all this in your previous s. You can get straight to the point and give him some details.

NOW LOOK HOW A STUDENT DEALT WITH THIS QUESTION Hi Chris, Good to hear from you and thanks for helping me to find a place to stay while I’m in [name of place/ town / city]. I’ll be arriving at the beginning of July and I’m working until the end of September, so I’ll need accommodation for those three months. The restaurant where I’m going to work is in [X ] Street, which is near the city centre, so I would prefer to live not too far from there if possible. Then I could go to work on foot. Apart from that, if the flat is near the centre, I could see some of the sights and go shopping too, when I have some time off. You know how I love looking for bargains! I can’t afford to pay a very expensive rent, and I don’t mind if the flat is tiny. But if you could find a sunny flat or one with a balcony, I’d be very grateful! Thanks again for all your help and please let me know if you can find anything. I’m really looking forward to seeing you when I get there. Hope to hear from you soon, Clara 185 words approx.

WRITING TASK Your English friend, Steve, is thinking of visiting you next month with his girlfriend. Read his and write an appropriate answer: I’ll be coming to visit you in May with Linda, my girlfriend, and it’s the first time I’ve ever been to your town, so it would be great if we could meet again. I was hoping you could suggest a few nice places to visit and you’ll be able to show us around if you’ve got time. We haven’t decided where to stay yet, so maybe you could find somewhere cheap, but comfortable for 2 nights. One more thing. Can you tell me how to get from the railway station to your house? I haven’t got a GPS and we might get lost! See you next month, Steve

BEFORE YOU WRITE Put yourself in the shoes of Steve - what does he need to know? What information will help him to make the most of his visit? Have you already been in contact with him? YOU’ll obviously have to make some suggestions. Can you think of different ways to make suggestions in English?

MAKING SUGGESTIONS Why don’t you …? / Maybe you could …? / How/ what about + ing…? You can’t leave New York without (...doing sth) I’m sure you will enjoy (...doing sth). If you like, we can … Do visit... / Don’t forget to... You / we could visit New York while you're / we're there. Let's… I suggest you /we…
