Moving Up Night Welcome to First Grade! MS. TSCHOP MRS. KUNKEL

Ch-ch-ch-changes…  One teacher  Independence and responsibility  Making meaning of words  Assessment  From “I can’t” to “Let me try a strategy”.  We are a TEAM!

Beginning of Year Assessments  Writing Assessment – 2 complete sentences  Five sequential sentences with punctuation, capitalization, spacing, and appropriate spelling by the end of year.  DRA – Reading Level Assessment  What level text can your child read and retell?  Phoneme Segmentation Fluency  Taking a word and breaking it apart – cat is c/a/t

Beginning of Year Assessments  Nonsense Word Fluency  Reading a nonsense word prepares students to break apart words with more than one syllable – Example – ket is a piece of mar ket  Everyday Math Beginning of Year Assessment  Counting forward and backward by 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s  Identifying and explaining patterns  Identifying each coin

The Monster – Vowel Sounds  As a whole, first grade’s largest challenge has been students’ knowledge of their short vowels. If students do not know their short vowel sounds, they have a difficult time blending and decoding words.  How can you help?  Websites:

What Can You Do To Help Us? ENJOY YOUR SUMMER, but while you do…  Talk to your child about money – counting and making change  Help your child begin understanding time – “Oh look, it is 10:00..”  Read together – even if your child is not the one reading, they benefit from your daily conversation  Help your child develop more independent skills – tying shoes, etc.  Do activities that boost fine motor skills – finger paint, sidewalk chalk, playdough, anything that has your child using their fingers to strengthen them.

Thank you! We look forward to working with you and having a successful year!
