Bucuresti, 22- May Organic Animal Breeding Possibilities to Safe the Biodiversity in Hungary SEREGI János, PUSZTAI Péter

Factory farming reduced biodiversity high environment pollution no animal welfare

Organic farming In 2000 more than one million hectares were designated to animal breeding. This will increase by about 20% in 2010, to almost 1.3 million hectares. Regarding the animal housing capacity of these territories, they could be the base for million large animal farming. If the actual organic production (0.1%) can be increased by 10% in 2010, the production of bio meat and other products (e.g. milk, eggs) would be about 8,750 tons.

The meat contains saturated fatty acids Some of the saturated fatty acids are unhealthy The meat consumption increases the cholesterol level and loads the fat metabolism The meat consumption increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) The Mediterranean nutrition with low meat content decreases the incidence of CVD The animal fat contains 55-65% unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) The saturated fatty acids from meat have slightly cholesterol decreasing effect The optimal n-6/n-3 ratio (2-3:1) decreases the risk of CVD At moderate meat consumption the vegetable consumption is high The meat CLA content is anti carcinogenic In heart attack the LDL/HDL ratio is determinant (Ender, 2006.) The meat covers less than 20% of the calories from food, contains easy digestible proteins, high amounts of vitamin B and iron PAST PRESENT
