April 15, 2016 Objective: I will be able to develop a contour map. Success Criteria: I can measure and plot the necessary information to create a bathymetric map of a model seafloor. Storms Quiz Retakes Available Entry Task: What is the key difference between a bathymetric map and a topographic map? Take out your topographic maps from yesterday. Bathymetric Mapping 1.As a group, work together to build a model seafloor out of clay inside your bucket. Exaggerate the features you choose to incorporate in your model. You may cover some or all of the bottom of the bucket. 2.Cover your bucket with graph paper and tape the paper in place. Try to make the covering smooth and wrinkle free. This paper will represent sea level on your bathymetric map. 3.Pass your groups bucket to a new group according to instructions.
Bathymetric Mapping 1.When your group receives a new bucket, trace the bottom of the bucket on a sheet of paper to make a circle. Inside the circle you will mark the depths to create a bathymetric map. 2.Use the sharp end of the skewer to poke a hole in the paper, but then use the blunt end to measure the depth. 3.Think about how you will measure and keep track of where you are measuring. Within your group, work out a strategy for orientation and for recording measurements. 4.Take as many measurements as you can. Be sure to include both, the depth and location of the measurement. 5.As a group work to add the contour lines to the map. A.You and your group will need to decide the intervals between contour lines
