Power in Written Texts You have seven minutes to underline every use of the following in different colours. – Declarative sentences – Imperative sentences – Modal verbs – Use of the verb to be – Legalese – Formal language (including lack of contractions) – Archaic language

Power in Written Texts For each language feature you have annotated, note how it conveys power. Eg. all but two of the sentences are declarative which signals authority and lack of ambiguity. This reflects the fact that terms and conditions outline a legal position and must be crystal clear and impossible to circumvent. The authoritative tone shows that the document has the force of the law behind it.

Modality – Glossaries Ready Epistemic modality - express degrees of possibility, probability or certainty. Could, might, will etc. Deontic modality – express degrees of necessity and obligation. Must, should etc.

Powerful Language In your group make a list of all the features of written language which could convey power. Don’t share your ideas with other groups – this is a competition. Rally Robin

You have the power… Using the lexis and grammar features we have identified, write your own set of terms and conditions for anything you like… It could be the conditions for borrowing something that belongs to you, being your friend… Remember to use as many features of powerful written language as you can.

No strings this time… Swap with your partner and count up the number of powerful language features they have used. There will be a no-terms-and-conditions- attached prize for the winner.

Exam Style Analysis AO1 = academic, systematic application oflinguistic frameworks AO2 = links to relevant theory (16/48) AO3 = context, what language reveals about situation, relationships, social values.(32/48) Analyze the way language features convey power in the exert you are looking at. Use any frameworks you consider helpful and any relevant ideas from language study. (otherwise you can Google search iTunes T&C) services/itunes/us/terms.htmlhttp:// services/itunes/us/terms.html
