Chapter 20 Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System TCAS

The heart of the TCAS system is the transponder. Aircraft with Mode C transponders will respond to interrogations with altitude information. Aircraft with Mode S transponders will respond to interrogations with address information. Because TCAS operates aircraft-to-aircraft, it is not dependent on ground stations.

TCAS on Vertical Speed Indicator

The red arc indicates the area to avoid, the pilot always shoots for the green arc. In this example, the airplane is descending at about 3000 feet per minute. Textbook page 149

Chapter 24 Connectors

Connector s Light aircraft have connectors in the dozens while large aircraft have them in the hundreds.

Connector s Connectors are a major cause of equipment failure. Pins are wired incorrectly, bare wires touch and short circuit, contamination fowls connections and or connector pins are accidently bent. Failed connectors can mimic system failures.

D Subminiature. The "D" refers to the shape of the connector, which is wider on one side to prevent the plug from being inserted incorrectly.

Ferrite Beads or Chokes

Coaxial or Coax Cable The term coaxial comes from the inner conductor and the outer shield sharing a geometric axis. Coaxial cable is used as a transmission line for radio frequency signals.

Coax Cable AC 43 1 Never kink coaxial cable. 2 Never drop anything on coaxial cable. 3 Never step on coaxial cable. 4 Never bend coaxial cable sharply. 5 Never loop coaxial cable tighter than the allowable bend radius. 6 Never pull on coaxial cable except in a straight line.

Aircraft Structures

Fuselage stations (Fus. Sta. or FS) are numbered in inches from a reference or zero point known as the reference datum. The reference datum is an imaginary vertical plane from which all fore and aft distances are measured.

Buttock line or butt line (BL) is a vertical reference plane down the center of the aircraft from which measurements left or right can be made.

Water line (WL) is the measurement of height in inches perpendicular from a horizontal plane usually located at the ground, cabin floor, or some other easily referenced location.

Workers recover drone stuck on 115,000-volt power line A drone stuck in a power line over Lake Union’s Mallard Cove for nearly a week came down Saturday, at a cost of nearly $35,000to Seattle City Light. The drone had become a nuisance to the houseboat tenants in Mallard Cove because of a loud buzzing it created hanging off the 115,000-volt transmission line — and it also decreased the efficiency of the line.
