Before Exterior Inspection Checklist ? ? Ever have questions about checklist items that are either: a) not in the sim or… b) different from the sim? ? ! This might help…

Before Exterior Inspection Checklist Step 2. Ejection handle – CHECK CONDITION Dash 1 WARNING: Ensure the metal loop in the ejection handle is not frayed or broken. The SIMULATOR ejection handle is NOT the same as the aircraft. Most SIM handles are a wire braid that are painted yellow & black. The AIRCRAFT ejection handle is rubber coated and thinner than the sim. The metal loop is inside the rubber ‘shell’. Note: The outer rubber ‘shell’ around the AIRCRAFT handle may be cracked, but the metal loop “in” the handle must not be “frayed or broken.”

Before Exterior Inspection Checklist If CFS handle is turned (after pin is pulled) very little upward movement is needed to activate the system. It takes ~ 15-25 lbs force to pull the handle (Dash 1) But only ~ 1/8” movement to activate (Egress shop). WARNING CFS HANDLE & CFS PIN AFT FWD

Brake reservoir – CHECK (NOTIFY MAINTENANCE IF FILLER PLUG GREEN BAND IS NOT VISIBLE OR LOWER RED BAND SHOWS) BRAKE RESERVOIR FILLER PLUG FRONT COCKPIT UPPER RED band ‘GREEN’ band… … is below the upper RED band. It doesn’t look very green. But it must be visible. BRAKE RESERVOIR FILLER PLUG is located just aft of the front ejection seat and next to the left canopy rail. LOWER RED band... …is below the GREEN band. It should not be in view. If it is in view, the brake reservoir is over-serviced. Filler plug is NOT in the sim.

Before Exterior Inspection Checklist Step 17. AUX BAT switch – ON AND CHECK a. Standby instruments – VERIFY FUNCTIONING How do you verify? Look at “power off” flag in the STBY turn & slip indicator. If the “power off” flag is RED there is no power. If the “power off” flag is BLACK there is power. “Power off” flag is in the sim but student may not know to check. Standby instrument lights show in sim, but won’t show in aircraft during daytime.

Before Exterior Inspection Checklist Step 24. CFS donor assemblies – INSPECT FOR PROTRUDING FIRING PLUNGERS (BOTH) NOT found in the sim. WARNING Actuation of a CFS initiator will cause the optical detonator to fire plungers in the CFS donor assembly. These plungers will not cause detonation of the CFS explosive cords if the canopy is open, but will be in a position to initiate detonation when the canopy is closed. Looking AFT FCP CFS donor assembly CFS acceptor assembly

Before Exterior Inspection Checklist CLOSE UPs of CFS ‘donor’ & ‘acceptor’ assemblies - FCP CFS acceptor assembly FWD CFS donor assembly Canopy Hinge Note how these look like the base of a bullet shell. When the canopy closes, the CFS acceptor assembly lowers on to the top of the CFS donor assembly.

Before Exterior Inspection Checklist You are looking for “PROTRUDING FIRING PLUNGERS” in the CFS donor assembly CFS acceptor assembly FWD If firing plungers protrude… …nothing happens until the canopy closes. When canopy closes…the acceptor assembly makes contact with the donor assembly firing plungers. It is similar to a firing pin striking the base of a bullet. This will detonate the CFS. Note these look like the bottom of bullet shells CFS donor assembly & firing plungers

CFS acceptor assembly closing on the donor assembly & firing plungers Looking AFT Note firing plungers are gray & extend ~ 1 inch. Very little force by the firing plungers on the receptor assembly is needed to fire the CFS. If you close canopy on protruding plungers, the CFS will fire. CFS attach bolt is NOT in the simulator. Ejection Seat THIS is the CFS Attach Bolt CFS attach bolt Side view. Vertical Rod This short tether is NOT the CFS Attach Bolt. It is simply to keep from ‘losing’ the CFS attach bolt during maintenance. Note how the CFS attach bolt connects the ejection seat to this vertical rod

Before Exterior Inspection Checklist CFS ATTACH BOLT – what it sets in motion… …which finally cut through the canopy… When the seat goes up the rail… …which goes to the detonating chords that are glued to the canopy… …the CFS attach bolt pulls this rod… …which ‘lites’ the SMDC (Shielded Mild Detonator Chords) …a fuse that burns at ~ 6000’/sec …this rod activates this mechanism (The Seat Motion Detector Laser) …which sends a signal thru fiber optic cables to detonator in back of donor assembly… …which strike the CFS acceptor assembly …which fires another detonator… …which detonates, and extends the donor assembly plungers…

Leg Restraint Lines How they function during an ejection (continued). Note: once the leg garter is against the seat, the leg restraint line can put NO additional pull, or pressure, on the leg. AIRCRAFT No matter how much pull is placed on this leg restraint line… …the leg garter ring cannot be pulled any closer to the seat.

Leg Restraint Lines How they break away from aircraft during an ejection. AIRCRAFT Close-up of Shear Rivet When the leg restraint line gets pulled taught… Shear ring is NOT found in the sim. …it is designed to break at the shear ring. Shear rivet is NOT found in the sim. If it doesn’t… …it will break loose at the shear rivet.

Leg Restraint Lines How they restrain, then release, pilot’s leg after the ejection seat is out of the aircraft. AIRCRAFT Leg restraint line cannot move in this direction through Snubber Unit (unless YOU rotate snubber knob) RESTRAIN RELEASE The snubber unit keeps the leg restraint line taut by not letting it move in the direction that allows slack. On seat/pilot separation the leg restraint line is released from the seat and the leg garter slips out.

Leg Restraint Lines HOW to lengthen lines if they are too tight AIRCRAFT Snubber Unit Rotate the snubber knob. (Rotate top of knob toward center of seat.) … and allows you to move the leg garter out (away from seat). This raises the snubber…

Ejection seat manual override (MOR) handle – VISUALLY CHECK FULL DOWN AND LOCKED How do you “VISUALLY” check full down and locked? If the MOR handle is in the horizontal, and the button is extended above the upper surface, it is down & locked.

Seat Survival Kit (SSK) – MAKE SURE ADU MODE SELECTOR SWITCH IS IN DESIRED POSITION… …AND VISUALLY INSPECT THAT ADU AND RADIO BEACON CABLES ARE PROPERLY CONNECTED TO THE EJECTION SEAT This pin can easily be pulled out, allowing cables to fall loose. This would result in no ELT and no automatic SSK deployment. ADU & RADIO BEACON cables One activates the Automatic Deployment Unit for the SSK One activates the ELT ADU (Automatic Deployment Unit) selector valve: Auto = SSK lowered automatically 4-6 seconds after seat/pilot separation. Manual = Pilot must pull the SSK manual release handle located on LEFT side of seat. MOR (Manual Override Handle) provided to initiate seat/pilot separation if the automatic system fails or if seat/pilot separation is desired above 14,000’ MSL. Located on RIGHT side of seat. Operation of handle is prevented when the seat is installed in the aircraft. After ejection, the handle is free to function. The handle is locked in the down position by a catch operated by a thumb button situated at the forward end of the handle. Depressing the thumb button allows the handle to be rotated upward. Operation of the handle after ejection will fire a cartridge to operate the upper/lower harness locks, upper/lower bridle locks, & the headbox deployment unit. Simulator does NOT have the cables or pin. ADU mode selector switch
