Optical Encoders Vallejo High Engineering Academy Jack Gillespie 2010
What is an encoder? Encoders are digital devices that provide 1’s or 0’s as output. Optical shaft encoders are commonly used for position and motion sensing. By counting the 1’s and 0’s the number of rotations and the speed of rotation of a shaft can be figured. Vallejo High Engineering Academy Jack Gillespie 2010
Why do we care? We can use the optical shaft encoder to program the robot to travel a specific distance at desired speeds We can even use encoders to control turns Vallejo High Engineering Academy Jack Gillespie 2010
