Le partitif et l’article défini Grammaire Objectif: Students will learn how to use the partitive in French. Question essentielle: How do I use the French partitive, and is it obligatory?

The definite article (le,la,les,l’) refers to a specific item(s). Le livre de français est interessant. Les crayons sont dans le bureau.

When talking about something in a general sense, use the definite article. Le français est facile. Les légumes sont délicieux.

The definite article is also used to express likes, dislikes, and preferences. Il n’aime pas les maths. J’adore la glace au chocolat. Nous préférons le coca.

The partitive (de la, du, des, de l’) is used to express “some” or “any.” It refers to an unspecific amount. Vous avez du jambon? Je mange des frites. Il achète de la viande.

In English, use of the partitive is optional. However in French, the partitve is required. Tu as des cousins? Do you have (any) cousins? Ils mangent du poisson. They are eating (some) fish.

The partitive are the contractions from last chapter- de+ a definite article: du masculine singular de la feminine singular de l' m or f in front of a vowel or h des m or f plural Ex: je voudrais du fromage. I would like some cheese.
