Technology Awareness Role: DISTRICT EDUCATOR Yovanka Kelly EDU620 Professor Deborah Naughton 3/28/16

District Educator Being that my community has the opportunity to receive an $18 million educational bond, I am taking the role of an educator within the community. My role will be to introduce the use of technology within the classroom to the residents of the community. I will also raise awareness on how technology can be used in the classroom as a learning tool. By bringing the community into the school for my presentation my main reason for doing this will get the residents to understand that the purpose of providing students with technology tools is to ensure that they can achieve the academic standards that have been established (Edyburn, D. L., 2013).

Station 1:Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Audience Balloons Student Testimonies Lots of colors (inviting) Having teachers there to vouch how important UDL is for them teaching and the students. According to an article in inclusion classrooms, all children have access to the general education curriculum and learning environment, all children can participate in all activities and routines through scaffolding and intervention, and all teachers have the tools they need to help all young children, who have unique strengths and needs (Bertling, J., Darrah, M., Lyon, D., & Jackson, S.,2012). Information I want the residents to know that UDL is essential for Pre-Kindergarten through 12 th grade as well as adult learners at the community center because it gives them an opportunity to be included with the other students. Not only are they learning but they are learning at their own pace and on their own level UDL is essential to learning. I will provide the residents with an example such as I will give them an example such as, a bright student with dyslexia may be capable of understanding history and science concepts but his inability to decode words prevents him from learning these concepts from printed books (Rose, D., 2000).

Station 1: UDL Demonstration I will provide them with a visual which will be a video of UDL actually being used in the classroom. The video will show the residents how the students use to be excluded from their peers. I will have students in grades 11 th or 12 th that actually use UDL because of their disability. They will share with the residents their experiences before UDL and how they have changed since they have used UDL. Differentiation No longer will they have to be separated from the rest of the class or be secluded from the class because UDL gives them a chance to be included in the classroom as well. Incorporating UDL principles enhances learning by allowing students to participate in the same activities as other students and it gives them a chance to feel comfortable even though they are not learning the same as the other students. Although, differentiated instruction, UDL, and multicultural education are rarely discussed in an integrated manner, they can be viewed as supportive theories with multiple converging concepts (Van Garderen, D., & Whittaker, C, 2006).

Station 1: UDL Interaction: Residents will have the opportunity to really talk to them one on one and really listen to their testimonies on UDL. There will be computers set up so that the residents can get a glimpse on what the students will be doing on the computers. This will show the residents that the money will be put to good use with the use of UDL and technology.

Station 2: Technology and UDL for all learners Mission, Belief, and Goals - For this school district the mission and belief statement is to provide the students with the best education. With the use of technology integration and CTE the students will be getting the best education that will prepare them for the future. Goals - Develop student’s minds and make them become aware of the use of technology in the classroom. - Provide the students with the proper education based on their learning ability.

Station 2:Course and/or Program Offerings These courses are some of the courses and programs that will serve as examples for the residents. Culinary Arts Automotive Repair Cosmetology Information Technology Computer Education ( Program for all grades) Understanding Others (Course for all grades) Life Skills ( Course for all grades) Mathematics

Station 3: 21 st Century Skills Acquisition and Employability Technology and 21 st Century Skills -From the list of courses above all of the course will integrate technology however, I decided to choose computer education. Based on this course there will be some 21 st century skills that will be taught. 1.Content and Knowledge Skills -global awareness will be taught because the student will learn how to use the internet to look up different information or current events. 2. Learning and Innovation Skills - communication and collaboration will be taught in the course because there will be times when the students have to collaborate together to complete assignments

Station 3: 21 st Century Skills Acquisition and Employability 3. Information, Media and Technology Skills -This skill will teach the students how to effectively use technology as a source or a resource. 4. Life and Career Skills -the students will learn productivity which will teach them how to get their work done in a timely manner.

Station 3: 21 st Century Skills Acquisition and Employability Tools The iPads will be used to research information, watch videos, and play games related to the lesson for additional help. Another digital tool that will be used is online tutoring with the teacher. Interaction The residents will be able to try out some of the games and be able to talk to teacher tutors over the computer. This will increase the resident’s interest because they are actually getting the chance to try out some of the things that students use in the classrooms.

Station 3: 21 st Century Skills Acquisition and Employability New Technology If the bond is granted school and community programs, courses, and students would benefit by providing students and adults with the opportunity to learn the way that is best for them. Also, for those people with disabilities it will show them that they can do the same work or they can search the internet just like anyone else.
