Romanian PANFLUTE

The Panflute is a musical wind instrument, made of sonorous tubes, of different sizes, sticked together, after their length. On the Romanian panflute, the tubes are sticked together in a concave shape. It can’t be known the origin and the inventor of the panflute years ago, the musical sounds were definite orderly, in this connection of cane sticks. This was the primordial panflute. The archaeology and the hystory praised the panflute’s presence in every corner of the world. It seems that, the beginning of this instrument was the flute of Pan ( this name was given because the Greek God Pan was portrayed, playing at this instrument). It looked like a bunch of tubes of different sizes, which symbolised the musical notes.

In Romania, were discovered many archaeological proofs of the panflute’s existence in the first year A.D. Is is supposed that Panflute has entered in the Romanian culture, after the contact with the Greek people, at the Black Sea coast.

The Romanian Panflute is known and accepted all over the world with this name, because the Romanian panflute has a concave shape. The spreading of the panflute began in the XVIII century, when the folk music bands composed of panflute, violin and kobsa, were set up.

The Panflute, although an ancient instrument, became appreciated and listened only nowadays, in the interpretation of Gheorghe Zamfir, Romanian Panflute’s singer and musical composer, known as the Panflute’s King.

He was born in Gaesti, near Targoviste. He is the one that has changed the shape, the construction and the technique of the panflute. He is the one who introduced this instrument in all the musical styles and brought the panflute to the attention of the modern public.

Gheorghe Zamfir chenged the traditional Romanian panflute made by 20 tubes and transformed it into one with 22,25, 28 and 30 tubes. He obtained 9 tones for each tube. In this way, it is possible the melancholic interpretation of the sad Romanian folk songs, of the moaning songs and, also, of some human voice’s sounds. He is making by himself his panflutes, using bamboo wood. He tunes it, using a small quantity of honey, which is introduced in the tubes. In 2003, he made the Giant Panflute, of 42 tubes, 1,32 m height and 1,2 m breadth.
