Context Clues What are Context Clues? The words that surround a word are called its context. Information about the meaning of a word that is contained in the surrounding words is called a context clue.

Types of Context Clues Synonym – two words with the same meaning Example: Meat eaters, that is carnivores, are at the top of the food chain. Definition – a given meaning for a word Example: Archaeology is the scientific study of prehistoric cultures by uncovering their remains.

Types of Context Clues Example – an example of the word, but not the exact definition Example: My brother is enthralled by birds, similar to the way I am fascinated by insects. Contrast – an opposite example of the word Example: At night the streets were serene, unlike the chaos it normally is during the day.

Types of Context Clues Inference – use what you know to create your own definition Example: The monkey’s vociferous chatter made me wish I had earplugs.

Context Clues Vocabulary Directions: Circle all underlined words. Highlight the sentence that contains the underlined word. Read the article, “What is the Purpose of School?” as a Large Group.
