ANALYSING THE POEM Flag – John Agard

SILENT READING If you’re not reading – it WILL result in C points.

Your Task – In pairs Find a copy of the poem online. Save it to your area. Create a PowerPoint presentation analysing each stanza. You are looking for language techniques where possible. Think of the PEEZ chain (Point Example, Explain, Zoom). Include some closing thoughts on the poem. You will be presenting your analysis to the class! CHALLENGE: Include an activity for the class to complete related to the poem

Stanza 1 - Example What’s that fluttering in a breeze? Its just a piece of cloth That brings a nation to its knees Poet starts each stanza with a rhetorical question. What effect does this have on the reader? When you are on your knees, what does it usually mean? Worship Prayer Begging What does this line suggest about the poets attitude towards flag? Poem uses verbs to describe the flag. “Stanza 1 opens with the image of a flag fluttering in a breeze. The poet outlines his attitude towards flags by stating it is “just a piece of a cloth”. However he also highlights the power of a flag by indicating its ability to make a nation of people get on their knees. This has the effect that they are worshipping or praying to the flag, connoting its power.

This has the effect that they are worshipping or praying to the flag, connoting its power.

Include some closing thoughts: Do you think the poem is giving a negative view of patriotism (love for and loyalty to your country)? Explain your answer using quotations. Does the flag have any power of its own, or is it people who give it power? Explain your ideas.
