GCSE Physical Education Year 10 Mock Exam

THE EXERCISE SESSION WARM UP > MAIN ACTIVITY > COOL DOWN The warm up prepares the body for the activity you are about to take part in and the cool down then helps the body return to a resting state.

THE EXERCISE SESSION Warm Up… Benefits – 1) Muscles will be able to contract and relax more quickly. 2) Oxygen will be more easily available because of the increased heat of the body. 3) It helps you focus as it is a psychological preparation. 4) Reduces the risk of injury. Phases – Pulse Raising > Stretching > Event Specific Drills

THE EXERCISE SESSION Cool Down… -Reduce muscle stiffness. -Speed up removal of lactic acid. -Keeps blood circulating back to the heart and gradually reduces the heart rate. Phases – Reduction in Body Temperature (Helps removal of carbon dioxide and lactic acid) > Stretching to help reduce temperature, remove waste products and increase range of movement.

Methods of Training CONTINUOUS TRAINING It is an activity which uses large muscles groups and you do not rest. It develops cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. Is it aerobic or anaerobic? Is it continuous or intermittent?

INTERVAL TRAINING It is training which has breaks built in to allow the performer to recover so they can continue to work at high intensity levels. Is it aerobic or anaerobic? Is it continuous or intermittent?

CIRCUIT TRAINING A method of physical conditioning in which one moves from one exercise to another, usually in a series of different stations or pieces of equipment. Is it aerobic or anaerobic? Is it continuous or intermittent?

WEIGHT TRAINING A form of strength training where you can use free weights or machine weights. You complete a series of sets and repetitions. Is it aerobic or anaerobic? Is it continuous or intermittent?

CROSS TRAINING Combines two or more types of exercise. Performers whose activities demand a wide range of fitness may use this method. Is it aerobic or anaerobic? Is it continuous or intermittent?

FARTLEK TRAINING This is another form of continuous training. It involves running at different paces and over different terrains. Is it aerobic or anaerobic? Is it continuous or intermittent?

SPORT ENGLAND Sport England has an initiative which looks to make England an active and successful sporting nation. They set out guidelines for achieving success… -START – increase participation to help improve the health of the nation, focusing on priority groups. -STAY – retain people in sport with clubs, facilities, coaches, volunteer and competitive opportunities. -SUCCEED – Achieve sporting success at every level.

MAXIMUM HEART RATE – 220 MINUS ( - ) YOUR AGE

SOMATOTYPES (Body Type) ECTOMORPHS Tall and thin, delicate build, lightly muscled, suited to endurance. MESOMORPHS Athletic build, gain muscle easily, little fat, built for speed, strength or power. ENDOMORPHS Rounded appearance, trouble losing weight, gain muscle, suited to sports which don’t require as much speed or mobility.
