Format Essay Portion: First – Brief Literary Analysis Objective Test: –True/False –Multiple Choice –75 Questions (75 Points)

True/False and Multiple Choice Details about each character: What do they do that is significant? Know who each person is and what makes them unique from other characters. Character relationships: How are people linked? How do they influence one another? Public perception: How are characters perceived by the townspeople? Chronology of major events Motivation behind actions: Why does Hester stay in Boston? What drives Chillingworth? Major conversations: Hester and Chillingworth, Hester and Dimmesdale, Pearl and Hester Pearl’s interpretation of the scarlet letter The conclusion of the book

Who said it? Be familiar with quotations from moments in the novel revealing: –Hester’s opinion of Chillingworth –Hester’s opinion of Dimmesdale –Conversations of significant importance between Hester and Chillingworth between Chillingworth and Dimmesdale between Hester and Dimmesdale between Hester and Pearl questioning Pearl’s nature/who her father is –Pearl’s moments of dramatic irony and her assessment of the scarlet letter –The townspeople’s assessment of Hester and Dimmesdale I will give you a bank of characters and you have to identify WHO said WHAT…they will be fairly obvious if you’re familiar with the plot of the novel Because there are fewer actual speakers in the novel, you will have to use the names more than once.

Essay Portion AP Prompt – Literary Analysis You will read a short passage from the text and be asked to analyze the writing for a specific purpose. Review Literary Analysis notes Make sure to connect evidence to the prompt. The essay will be graded on the AP scale – out of 25 points Test point total – 100 Points

Odds and Ends Study guides – IF you have been doing them all along, the odds are you will do better on the test. IF you do them in one cram session tonight, you’re still reviewing Therefore, Close Reading Guides are fair game to use on the test! If you copy them from a brilliant classmate, you are really only wasting your time - but I’m not your keeper – use your integrity! Books need to be free of markings/sticky notes, etc. I will collect them before the test.

Essay Prompt Using what you know about various methods of characterization, choose one major character from The Scarlet Letter. Discuss Hawthorne’s purpose for this character and how he/she supports a suggested purpose for the novel as a whole. Include ample textual support from the novel as support.
