An emotional journey Compassion from the people of Cambridge Stepping back and taking time to think rationally Transferred into action A plan is formed and 3 families are expected before Christmas
It’s all in the planning, almost! Steering group with colleagues from Housing & Revenue and Benefits; external partners including County Council and Voluntary Groups Some were missing - Health Early decision to make the transition at least semi-permanent and sustainable Offer of non-Council accommodation – Amalgamating with Town Hall Lettings (overseeing private sector) – Housing Association offers
How many, what make up, what support? 3 families: 14 people in total - adults, school age children, toddlers and babies Offer of accommodation in line with Cambridge City Council housing policy 2 families arrived early December. One of the original families fell through – replacement family arrived late December Wide range of needs in this relatively small group
Challenges: Finance Need to consider the risk Spending before you receive the funding What if someone leaves?
Challenges: Communications Explaining scheme limitations to the public Medias pressure to present the families Sensitivity to the housing/benefits issue
Conclusion Steep learning curve Significant opportunity for invited families Go for it!
Support and Vulnerabilities Intensive support for the first 3 months Range of support needed Interpretation Volunteers – expectations and practicalities
